We're number three!

According to a survey from the Gartner group, Apple is again the third largest PC vendor in the United States. The company nosed out Acer for the second-quarter bronze. (Dell is number one, followed by HP in second place.)

Apple shipped 1.4 million units last quarter, 38 percent more than the prior quarter. In the United States, PC shipments overall grew by just 4.2 percent.

IDC research manager David Daoud credited Apple's competitors with the company's success, citing consumers' disappointment with the "lack of innovation" among other PC manufacturers. Also: Windows Vista. 'Nuff said.

But that's just the U.S. Apple still lags worldwide, selling only 3.2 percent more units abroad than last quarter. Compare that to other manufacturers, who sold an average of 16 percent more units.

Macs account for nearly 8 percent of internet-connected computers worldwide.

I didn't even know HP still made computers. I just don't keep up with the Windows PC industry anymore.

You must not watch television, either... they have advertisements all the time.

I saw one today for a touch-screen desktop/kiosk PC.

I watch tv, just not commercials. I fast forward using my DVR and I have this strange ability to completely tune out commercials completely. I think it's probably ADD... lol I just don't see them.

"...Apple still lags worldwide..."

Of course. At least in Brazil their products are extremely expensive. 2 months ago I bought the black MacBook (standard config) for USD 3,125.00 here. In US the same MacBook is USD 1,499.00...

Another example, iPod shuffle 1gb, USD 49 in US vs USD 124.38 over here...

I just wonder how much will the 3G iPhone cost when it comes to Brazil.

It's the same thing here in Australia. Our dollar is almost at parity with the US dollar, but our Mac prices are ridiculous. The base MacBook with combo drive is $1499 ($1456 US). At that price Windows laptops are a lot more powerful and have more features.

I wonder where all the Acer computers are. I see Apple, Dell, HP all over, but I don't remember seeing an Acer since my mom got one....15 years ago maybe?

I would like to see numbers without the inclusion of business/corporate sales numbers.

I'd be interested in knowing how may Macs are replacements, upgrades, or second computers, versus how many are first-time (or first-in-a-long-time) Apple buyers.

I'd also be interested to know how old the machines being replaced (from all manufacturers) are, and what kind of brand loyalty there is outside of Apple.
