Apps for Apple TV: sign me up
Saul Hansell, over at the New York Times Bits blog, takes Microsoft's recent announcement about Xbox LIVE Community Games as a jumping off point to some speculation about Apple TV (and who doesn't like speculation?). Hansell wonders what would happen if Apple were to open up an App Store for the Apple TV, and I have to admit that I think that's a brilliant idea.I've always thought that the Apple TV would greatly benefit from third party plugins (official ones, I mean, not hacks), if not full blown apps. Take, for example, the YouTube functionality. Wouldn't it be cool if you could watch videos from Viddler, Vimeo, or any of the other countless video sharing sites, in addition to those on YouTube? And let's not forget Netflix. Microsoft and Netflix have teamed up to offer the 'Watch it now' library of videos to XBox Live Gold members. Being able to watch those videos from Netflix on my Apple TV would make me one happy panda.
Hansell notes that to make apps on the Apple TV viable something has to be done about that horrible onscreen keyboard. He thinks that Apple might tie the iPhone into the Apple TV as a way to control it. Luckily, Apple has already done this. As John Gruber points out, when you have Apple's Remote app on your iPhone you are able to use the iPhone to enter text into your Apple TV.
Let's hope Apple stops thinking about Apple TV as a hobby and starts making an aggressive push for the living room. I like my Apple TV, but my XBox 360 offers up more functionality (and more heat!).

+1 and brilliant idea.
As a wave 1 adopter of AppleTV, I still find it very, very hard to "convince" others of the merits of the AppleTV. Anything could help.
I think Apps for the AppleTV are a natural extension.
The MacMini provides the functionality people are wanting - but not in an easy to use (and elegant) interface - not something that works from 10 foot away.
As for the comment that the AppleTV and iPhone are vastly different interfaces, I think that's actually wrong. The Mac can have smaller text & options than the aTV, but both the iPhone and AppleTV have less screen realestate - they fit roughly the same number of options/choices, so the interface paradigm becomes comparable in several ways. (Of course the AppleTV isn't touch!).
Apple could do alot more with the AppleTV. I'm not sure why they haven't. Hopefully the iPhone will kick off interest in 2 ways
1) the app store model
2) interaction with the iPhone
Hopefully interaction with the iPhone will motivate Apple much more to move things along. What if an iPhone user (enthusiastic about something they've found) can just "flick" it onto the AppleTV - eg: a youTube video you're watching on the iPhone flicks across to the big screen, a website you're reading, an email with funny video/pictures flicked to the aTV, or your own videos/music.
Also, a better remote app would be required and useful of course. Could we consider syncing the iPhone via the AppleTV? (not because it's the best idea... but if you think about how that would work it makes you shuffle how you think about our media)
No way Apple will ever do DVR! But they will add applications. My guess is this is the product transition they are talking about.

I'd be all about hooking it up to Hulu, Vimeo, etc, as well as Netflix streaming, and a Pandora client.... sign me up!
Safari? DVR? - meh. i don't really care about those two. they'd be neat, i guess, but not a priority for me.
Hi, this is Luck from AppleTVSource and AppleTVHacks.net. Thanks for the link to AppleTVHacks.net, by the way.
Anyhow, I've been writing about getting 3rd party apps on the Apple TV since last year. So far nothing from Apple. I don't know if the App Store will motivate them to open up the Apple TV. They obviously know the benefits of opening up the Apple TV. However, they are still refusing to do it.
I wrote way too many articles on this subject that I am not going make any kind of speculations until I see it happening for real.
Hey Scott,
Does the Apple TV have anything in common with the internets and the Google?
MLB.TV Mosaic, please.

July 25 2008 at 8:40 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyApple TV provides us with a dozen hours a week of video podcasts - including full-screen 16x9 HD from Tekzilla and Command-N. More content would be great. Streaming internet radio has been a fine addition in recent months.
Really great would be the minimal functionality that WebTV offered before it was purchased and sat in the corner by MSoft.
I don't even care if the onscreen keyboard was all. Initial surfing to a site - and adding it to Safari as a favorite - would add the world of use for me.
Well, an IR keyboard would be OK, too.
Or can we maybe have an IR keyboard?
