10.5.5 developer seed released, includes install warning

Yesterday, we noted that Apple was close to releasing a 10.5.5 seed for developers. Little did we know that it would be dropping a couple hours later. AppleInsider is reporting that the 10.5.5 developer seed was released today, along with an interesting note.

Developers were told not to install the update on any Mac that uses integrated graphics. These computers include: MacBook Air, MacBook, Mac Mini, and some models of iMac. The build number of 10.5.5 is showing up as "build 9F5," however, these pre-release build numbers have a history of changing before the update is released to the general public.

Developers were asked to evaluate many parts of the OS, specifically: AirPort, FileSync, and the Finder. AppleInsider notes that this update fixes over 82 bugs that were reported in 10.5.4.

Apple has created great technology (CoreImage/CoreVideo) andabsolutely ruined it by putting crappy intel graphics in their best selling devices (macbooks, mac minis and even older iMacs). My aging first gen mbpro still runs coreimage apps faster than the latest macbook being sold today.

I can only hope this is a sign integrated intel graphics will indeed be dropped and die a slow and painful death.

There's no reason to worry.

They won't drop support for the Macbook Air.

That means they won't drop support for other Macs with integrates system.

are you seriously telling me that since i'm on a macbook - I can't upgrade to 10.5.5 when it's released? If so Ima be ticked because this is still a fairly new system.....

Please, oh, PLEASE! let this be a sign that Apple's going to stop selling systems with those absolutely WORTHLESS Intel Integrated Crapfest...I mean Graphics chipsets.

I won't mind at ALL if that's what this means. I'm sure it's not. I'm sure it's just a build quirk, but still...I can hope. Not that I'm going to buy another MacBook. I've learned my lesson. From here on it'll be Macs with discrete video cards or nothing.

If the rumours are true that Apple will be using the power of the 3D graphics card to increase processing speed for regular desktop activities, this could be the start of an interesting Fall season!

That build number WILL change. Each build (whatever Apple fully defines as on of their own builds) gets a number. When 10.5.0 started the build was 9(for 9 version of darwin I believe) A (for the .0) and 589 for the 589th build of leopard. 9F5 is the 5th build of of 10.5.5 hopefully that number (and certainly will if integrated graphics are a problem) will increase as that means Apple is working on improving 10.5.5 10.5.4 9E17 was small. Usually .1 and great releases have 20-50 builds before release.
