Feral to bring Sid Meier's Pirates! to the Mac

Sid Meier's Pirates! was one of my favorite games of all time. Another legendary game from the mastermind behind Civilization, it first came out for the C64 way back in 1987 (with ports to both the Apple II and Mac). Then in 2004, it was remade for the PC and later ported to the (original) Xbox and PSP. Now Feral Interactive is finally bringing out an OS X version of Pirates!. The open-world (better yet, open seas!) gameplay is relatively simple, but addictive. There's an overall quest to exact revenge against a dastardly villain, which is advanced by various sub-quests, piracy on the high seas (of course!), trading goods, searching for buried treasure, and wooing Governors' daughters.

Sid Meier's Pirates! for Mac is available for pre-order at $30. It's expected to ship on August 29th.

Good news, but I played the newest version on PC a few years back and it does seem to get old rather quick. Tracking down the same ol guys, I was hoping they added a few things to this but I guess Feral does not do that.

Is there any chance they will be able to make any of the Fallout series for mac? I never did finish tactics before my computer quit on me.

I am seriously thinking of buying another PC just so I can play the new Fallout 3. I know I need help right.

I just preowned the game on your website to show my support to what you have done. Sid Meier's Pirates ! is one of my favorite game. I allready own it on PC, xbox and PSP but I bought it again for MacOS X because it will be wonderfull for me to play it under OSX! I have already played two games published by Feral and Robosoft (The Movies and Tomb Raider Anniversary) and I was quite surprised by the quality of the port. Compared to the poor ports I played (like Civilization IV published by Aspyr) Feral games are very very good ! I wish that you publish more great games like this one (when will you say which games are selected ?)!!! So I saw this place where people of Feral talk and I wanted to say you a very big Thank You for the work you have done. (Excuse-me for any mistakes I would have made, I'm french)

Sweet Holy Mother of Gaming!!

Yeah, sure its a couple of years too late and the dancing does bite the big one but this is Pirates on the Mac!!!! I remember how much time I spent trying to get my Pirates Gold working on modern machines before this came out so having a native version for the Mac will be sweet. Put me down for buying this one regardless of the negatives.

Bottom line is you're either a die hard Pirates fan or not. Those of who played Pirates on DOS know one from the other. :)

Avast ye scurvy dogs! Back to work with the lot of ya.

I have played this game on Windows. Although the first time was enjoyable, it was a rather short plot and did not have much staying power. The very worst part of this game was the dancing! Playing an action game and having to dance is quite painful. Even if it was EXTREMELY easy.

However, I did buy it because Sid Meier's name was attached. I am a huge fan of his stuff.

Wow. Talk about being late to the party. Then again they just released Fable: Lost Chapters too. I wonder if any of these games sold at all? I'm interested in all of these games but it's been stated a hundred times before; these are all old games that are easily playable on Boot Camp and the Windows versions can all be bought for 10 dollars anywhere.

Edwin,

Will Pirates! require that the DVD remain in the drive to play the game?

You need the disc in the drive when the game starts so that, ironically, the game can check that you're not a pirate. After the game has started though, you can take it out. :)

And it takes up 1.4giga-pieces-of-eight!

My computer meets the minimum requirements, but I'm wondering how well it would run.

single 1.25GHz MDD G4, 1GB RAM, 64 MB ATI Radeon 90000 Pro

Never mind. I read at Inside Mac Games that the minimum requirement was 1.2GHz, but Feral's site says 1.6GHz. Grrr. You know, I'd love to support Mac game development, but my Mac doesn't support the games. I keep having to get XBox versions of them.

I'm looking into getting a Macbook Pro but that won't be for a few months at the earliest.

Anyway, Pirates looks pretty darn cool.

No offense, but if you care about gaming even a little bit, why wouldn't you just use Boot camp for gaming? If I really wanted to play this game, I would have been playing it on Boot camp a year ago.

Besides, Mac ports usually perform worse than their PC counterparts, since they're usually running in some kind of emulation. Even when games are available on Mac and PC, I usually run them in Boot camp.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Mac, and I don't really use Windows for anything anymore, but Windows is good for one thing, and it's gaming.

It says it would work on GMA boards, but if I choose my macbook (late 2006) it then tell me that GMA950 is not supported. The reasoning is because it only have "64 mb" of memory, which is not completely true.

The game supports GMA cards fine, if you have a look it was because for a short time the Min and Rec spec on the VRAM got swapped round on the system selector. We have fixed this typo on the site.

About the GMA card, I agree it is not strictly true as the card in fact has no dedicated memory at all. The card can however share 64 MB of system RAM in OS X. (In boot camp running Windows it can access upto 224MB of VRAM ).

As this is an OS X game we quote the maximum memory the card can access in OS X. The newer X3100 MacBook machines can access 144MB of system RAM in OS X.
