ColorWare does their thing for the iPhone 3G

If black and white aren't enough for you, ColorWare is now offering their gadget coloring service for the iPhone 3G. Their iPhone site allows you to customize parts of your phone with 35 different colors on an à la carte basis. Obviously you have to send in your iPhone and the service takes about two weeks.
Unfortunately, it's not cheap. Just to color the back of the phone is $150 (all prices are US dollars), with additional color options for the frame, home button, SIM tray, earbuds, and dock running $10-$20 each. In fact, if you went wild and purchased full customization, your bill would be $230 -- more than the iPhone 3G. On the other hand, can you really put a price on being the only guy whose lilac-colored iPhone has a Candy Apple button?

I would just pick up a can of spray paint from Ace for $2.00 for a lil DIY action, then send my phone and be separated for 2 weeks!! That's just wrong!!
Also, Skinit.com seems like a more cost effective alternative, and it protects your phone...

Highway Robbery! Costs almost as much as the iPhone. Not worth it.

Highway robbery? Hardly. It takes actual skill and time to make those designs...
Hey, if you wanna pay minimum wage for minimum skill, I know a guy with a permanent marker...

I could get a body shop to paint my car for less than it costs to paint a MacBook. Colorware are severely over-charging for their services.
I wouldn't bother. Voids the warranty, costs more than what you're coloring, and makes your product look and feel stupid.
Buy a colorful case and save yourself a few hundred dollars.

"Highway robbery? Hardly. It takes actual skill and time to make those designs..."
....and you're exactly the idiot that Colorware is aiming their products at.
They're WAY too over charged for what you get. Why does a paint job cost more than the phone itself??
FAIL!

(sighs) if anyone actually looked at the colorware site, thy replace the apple warranty with their own. True, you're most likely looking at repairs as opposed to replacements if there's a problem, but the warranty exists.

They do amazing work, but their business is very poor. Customer service is poor, the quality is really good though. I had my lady friend's iPod done in December 07 before christmas, and it was brand new. Colorware messed up a component on the click wheel and they didn't test the device after it was painted. They sent it to me and it failed to play audio out of one side.
There was some paint in the headphone jack and we cleaned it out, didn't fix it. So I had to contact them and see if they would repair / fix it since they give you a warranty. They had me send it in, when they received it they told me it was fine and sent it back. I went through that 3 times they didn't test it, and they said it was fine each time.
I had to send it back a 4th time and they said it was the headphones so they sent brand new earbuds with it, again.. didn't work. I called them once more and they FINALLY told me to go to apple and have them diagnose it and get a print out of the cost. So I did. After I sent it this time, with the apple documents, they repaired it.
It was a pain staking process to get the damn thing fixed, my lady finally got to enjoy her brand new ipod 3 months afterwards.
Their work is good, but I'm not pleased with their service.

[snark] Makes it totally worth the high price, huh? [/snark]

Haha, most definitely. Didn't think I'd have to pay for it twice. ;)
In all reality I think their success rate is high, and I guess we all eventually bite a lemon, and that one was mine. I just think the way they handled the repair was more difficult than it should have been.

I sent them a brand new, never opened 8GB ipod touch that my wife won at work. 1 full month later, I received a beautiful all white ipod touch. Only problem is that the 4 lower buttons on the touch screen would not "touch". I got in touch with their service department the very next. They emailed me a fedex label with prepaid overnight shipping. I got it back 2 days later and its been perfect ever since. Very pleased with their work, would highly recommend and will use them again.

I'm looking for a supplier that will put a company logo onto the back of batches of the white iPhone so that they can be issued to staff as a corporate handset.
I'd appreciate it if the folks at TUAW could post a follow-up if they come across a company offering such a service.
