Rumor: New Cinema displays at Macworld '09?
MacRumors speculates on the possibility of Apple releasing updated Cinema displays at next year's Macworld Expo. According to the post, the new displays could incorporate the LED backlight technology that Apple has started building into their 15" MacBook Pros. MacRumors notes that LED backlit displays going into the 30" range tend to be more expensive than Apple's current 30" Cinema display. However, if this is true, it would be a nice change from Apple's 2004 design of the current Cinema displays. There is no word yet on if the new displays would include the iSight camera.

Mac mini with a SuperDrive as standard! A faster processor and a little more RAM would be nice too, but the current ones rune fine most of the time.
But get rid of it? Are you mad? It's the only way you can get a Mac for under £500.
(I know you can get second hand Macs for less sometimes, but they are rarely future-capable within the next six weeks.)
LEDs? yes please! Better yet make it multicolor for better color correction/wider color gamut :) and no isight camera, have 0 need for it.

Our laptop users are able to use iChat to video conference, but us desktop users are left out in the cold. We aren't going to spend the extra money for 3rd party webcams and the horrible software that comes with them.
That being said, every time Apple releases (which isn't often) a new Cinema Display, the price is outrageous for about 6 months to a year before it drops down to the normal every-day ridiculous price range.
That's because a lot of Pro users don't have use for an iSight. That includes myself.

We want to order some additional cinema displays, but I will not do so before the next revision, which should also provide HDCP compatibility. A price adjustment would be welcome as well.
I second others on the iSight and extra input option ... but I sincerely doubt that Apple will allow for more than one connection. That wouldn't fit with their design.
Tim, I agree, bring back the Cube. We have three and absolutely love them. They're not in daily use any more as we have some faster hardware but the PowerMacs are just behemoths. The iMacs with glossy screens are an absolute no for me. It is a shame Apple had to shrink it to a mini, hampered by slow components and which expansion options are nil. Something the size of a Cube - or 2/3rds of it - with real graphics card and dual monitor support ... or a mid range mac with room for two hard drives. We'd order in a heartbeat.
I think the Cinema displays are cool. I'd never buy one at the prices they are at, but if I were running a boutique business with minimalist industrial design, I would so have the receptionist use one. What it needs: Thinner, cheaper, built-in webcam (Apple needs some sort of in-house solution for Mac Pro and Mac Mini web chat), modern connections (HDMI, etc), and to not kill the mini.
Seriously, the mini is great, but in dire need of an update. What I really want is for Apple to bring back the Cube form factor with a proper fan at the price of the mini with much better components. The ability to get inside a small computer is a great draw for me. And I've been wanting to replace my house's 5 year old PC with a mini, after coming to love my MacBook Pro, but I keep holding out for a major update or redesign.
Feh on you! I love my Mac minis.

It's really pitiful that some of Apple's highest-end users (MacPro + Cinema Display) are among the only Mac users who don't have built-in iSight cameras; and Apple even stopped making the standalone iSight.
August 06 2008 at 3:49 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI finally got sick of my 17" square LCD and waiting for Apple to refresh the Cinemas, so I picked up a Samsung T260 yesterday. My MacBook doesn't support a 30", so 25.5" for $300 less than the 23" ACD was a bargain, and the subtle red touches on the display are gorgeous when you're looking for them...and unnoticeable when you're not. Plus it's got a VGA input so I can toggle between my Mac and PC really easily.
Here's hoping the new Cinemas are worth the wait, though, so I can pick one up in a few years as my next display. :)
