Apple updates Apple Software Update for Windows
A little friend showed up yesterday on Boot Camp-equipped Intel Macs and PCs with Apple apps (iTunes, Safari, QuickTime) installed -- an update to the updater that updates our updating. Apple Software Update 2.1.1 for Windows is out... there's no download page at Apple, so for now the only way to get your hands on it is via the existing Apple Software Update on your machine. What does it do? Well, it improves security and overall reliability. Recommended for all users. Keeps your refrigerator smelling fresh and can be used as a dentrifice ... wait, no, sorry, wrong stuff. If you do install the update and you notice any changes, positive or negative, do let us know.
Thanks Adam!

ex-Apple user here, who still scans the boards daily. I'm running Vista (and Office 2007) on my PC. Apple is still trying to push their browser through this "update" by listing it as "new software", and of course it's checked by default. I unchecked it and ran the install of the other stuff. what's even more egregious is the fact that right in the middle of the update, my Outlook process quit suddenly, and then magically returned a few minutes later. when the apple updated finished, it returned me to the updater window, again with Safari checked. it's like Apple is a softly glowing bulldozer, slowly mowing down computers and users who get in their way of taking over every desktop.

I believe the Outlook thing was related to QuickTime. It has always warned me to shut Outlook down before upgrading QuickTime in the past. This time, I have no idea if it would have because I shut Outlook down first.
As far as Software Update returning with Safari checked, it's being presented to you as an available update/new app (not sure which because I already use Safari), which you have not already installed and is being presented as an option. It's not installing the software even if you tell it not to.

I can't think what relationship Outlook would have with QuickTime unless you can play QuickTime content embedded in an HTML email. My suspicion here would be MobileMe and synchronisation with Outlook. Just a guess...
And, yes, the Safari thing is very bad and I wish something could be done about it.

Is there any way to change the language of the updater? It keeps coming up in Japanese for me. Now I know I'm in Japan but I'm using English Windows and I really would prefer the updater to be in English. Much appreciated if anyone has any ideas.
