Blast from the past: 1st generation iPod review

Ah, the simpler days: before the iPhone, before the iTunes store, and before Apple killed FireWire in favor of syncing via USB. Yes, we're talking about the birth of the iPod. This video is one of the very first reviews on TechTV (wow, anyone remember that television network?).

The original iPod came in 5 GB and 10 GB models, and sold for $399 and $499 respectively. The battery life was 10 hours, and first generation iPods were Mac-only, running on Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X 10.1 (Puma). Over the past few years, the iPod has definitely changed, and this video is living proof.

Um 10.1 was not Puma. 10.3 was.

And haha when he was like its got 10 hours of battery life she goes: "Wow!"

Um.. I believe Panther was 10.3, Jaguar was 10.2, and Puma was 10.1, but I digress. I wanted an iPod since the beginning, but I still think my 3rd gen with touch controls seems almost retro.

The iPod has been just booming with popularity and excitement since it first hit the marketplace. And as the iPods continue to grow in popularity, so does the demand to download free iPod videos.

I had one of the first iPods in the UK (got it at MacExpo where it was released). Everyone at work had an opinion about it, but you could tell those with vision because they could see the 'bigger picture': that it was called an i*POD* - not tying it to music, and meaning it was always going to be more than just a simple MP3 player.

Apple had the whole thing figured out from the start.

I still have my first gen iPod. I was very interested in the idea of a hard disk based MP3 player to use at work. I'd bought a Creative Labs player/recorder earlier. It worked with Windows, which was what I had back then, but it was the size of a CD player; not small. When the 5 GB iPod came out I really wanted one but it seemed too expensive. I finally talked myself into getting one, and (of course) had to have a Mac, too :)

Then the 10 GB iPod came out (about a month after I got the 5 GB) and Fry's let me return the 5 GB and pay the diff for the 10 GB (yea Fry's!).

So I became a Mac person, all because of the iPod!
(thank you Apple!) :)

Dang... sorry about the first two posts... 1Password had an old comment stored... DOH!

Anyway, I still have my old 10GB iPod. It's been sitting in the drawer but it still works. I might get it out and use it as an external drive.

It seems to me that with all the refurb MBP's listed on the Apple refurb site that a revised MBP should be coming soon.

Looks to me like they're clearing out inventory for new revised stock.

Thoughts?
