Ask TUAW: Mail.app problems, copying Time Machine backups, replacing an iPhone, GUI mockups and more
For this edition of Ask TUAW we'll have a look at problems with Mail.app, mocking-up GUIs, replacing a broken iPhone, visualizing disk space, copying Time Machine backups and much more.As always, your suggestions are most welcome, and questions for next week should be left in the comments. When asking a question please include which machine you're running and which version of Mac OS X, as certain answers will vary between different Macs and Tiger vs. Leopard, etc. (we'll assume you're running Leopard if you don't specify). And now, on to the questions!
Glenn asks
I am having a problem with mail on my iBook G4. I created a email with a bunch of photos in it, about 20 mbs worth. In the middle of sending it out (through gmail IMAP) I killed it. Or at least tried to. I had to kill mail as my network was getting hosed. Since then, when I start mail it keeps trying to send it, which fails and then continues to try and send it. I do not believe there is an issue on gmail's end, as I can use the web interface with out much of an issue. I tried clearing the queue from some instructions on the web. I also completely removed the account from mail and rebooted. Then added it back in. It started sending the email immediately.
I've never run into this problem, but I found this hint at Mac OS X Hints which may have your solution. Basically, they suggest removing the Outbox.mbox file from ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/.
Stan-O asks
can anyone suggest a good app for Leopard/Tiger for drafting GUI (I'm writing alot of specs for HTML/App UI)? I'd hate to run Visio in VM just for that.
You might as well use the Interface Builder included with Apple's Developers Tools. This is of course the way that actual GUIs are built for OS X, but you can use it to create mockups as well.
Alternately, you could check out OmniGraffle ($99.95 standard, $199.95 pro) with one of the UI stencils from Graffletopia.
Frank asks
Yesterday, i dropped and shattered the screen on my 1st-gen iphone (8 gig). i've been thoroughly satisfied with my 1st gen, and had no intention of upgrading to the 3G model. my question is: what are my options? can i get a 1st-gen phone to replace my broken one? how? where? how much? or is it better to upgrade to the 3G, and if so, how do i do that, and how much?
No, you won't be able to get a first gen iPhone from Apple or AT&T anymore. So your best option is probably just to upgrade to the 3G, though that will cost you $199 for the phone plus about $10 more per month (without SMS). AT&T does allow you to activate original iPhones on the original plans, so if you could obtain a first gen iPhone off of something like eBay you will be able to use it. In fact, if you can get a first gen iPhone you can probably just switch your SIM card (see this Apple Discussion thread)
Update: You can no longer purchase a first gen iPhone (which is what I meant), but a reader claims that it is possible to get a warranty replacement for $249 from an Apple Store. It's probably worth checking out if you really want another first gen and don't want to pay the increased monthly cost for the 3G iPhone.
sita asks
An iPhone 2.0 question: The only thing that keeps my at my Jailbroken 1.1.x fw is that I have installed Hebrew fonts. Does the 2.0 fw come with Hebrew fonts out of the box (the simulator does, but I'm not sure it is an accurate simulation in that part...)?
Check out this page. It seems that iPhone 2.0 doesn't have Hebrew built-in, but if you've previously installed the fonts they apparently still work (with the exception of the keyboard).
Sam asks
I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of a mac application that can display the contents of my hard drive graphically, to indicate which files are taking up the most disk space, similar to what seqouia view does for windows. If a freeware or in fact, any app for this could be recommended, I'd greatly appreciate it
I'm not familiar with the Windows app, but I suggest that you have a look at Disk Inventory X (donations requested).
Allison asks
I have an iPod Touch, I'm running 10.5.4 and I can't access my WiFi from the iPod. I know that I have WiFi in my house because my laptop shows that I have a good connection, but when I try to access it from my iPod, it doesn't recognize that there's a network. Under "Choose a Network...", all it shows is the "Other..." option. I'll click on this and manually enter the name of the network and the securities (none), but it displays the message that it can't find the network. I've tried resetting the iPod, turning my WiFi on and off, etc., etc., but nothing seems to help. I've scoured the Internet looking for solutions to this problem, but everything suggested doesn't seem to yield any good results or the instructions for fixing it are more tailored for the iPhone and requires using options that I don't have. Help!
You might start by Restoring the Touch in iTunes which will take it back to the factory default settings. Does the iPod touch work with any other WAP? If it doesn't then you may have a hardware defect and you should take it to an Apple Store Genius Bar. If it does work elsewhere, I suspect your problem may be on the other end with the wifi network. Is SSID broadcasting turned on in your WAP?
eric asks
1.Why do certain apps not switch to their open window in Spaces? the most annoying example is Abobe Lightroom, an app that I really need to always be full-screen.
Spaces behavior recently changed. Do you have the checkbox on in the Spaces tab of the Exposé & Spaces Pref Pane?

I use Mail.app, and I always drag files to the icon in the dock to email a new message (PDF,Jpeg,PNG). But recently whenever I do that, I get the beachball of death and I have to force quit. I do have a large Mail database, but besides archiving old messages and not having access to them in Spotlight which would be very inconvenient, could this be a preference thing? but which one can I try to trash and rebuilt without messing up my extensive folder directory or accounts?
You might try rebuilding the Mail Envelope Index as described here. At least one person reported success with this approach.
Nathan asks
does anybody know of an easy way of moving time machine backups from one drive to another? I tried just dragging and dropping but it failed after a few hours of trying to move the files. Both drives are formatted to work with time machine. I'd like to re-purpose my original backup drive and still keep my time machine backups.
According to this hint you can do this with the Restore feature of the Disk Utility. Others have also reported accomplishing this with a disk cloning utility like SuperDuper!.

I was using a similar prog (windirstat) to get my stats in windows. I'd been looking for this for quite a while on the OSX side of the house. Thanks TUAW (and thanks Sam for asking the question)...

Hi, I'm running Office 2008 from a MB with Leopard and I would like to know if there's any way to use Quicklook with the new .docx, .xlsb, etc. type of files. Thanks a lot.

docx, etc. files work fine in QuickLook for me. I have iWork 08, and I think it might include plugins for Office 08 files. You might be able to just download and install the iWork 08 30-day trial. Even when the trial runs out, the plugins should still work.

Thanks Zev, I do actually have iWork 08, and the weird thing is that I can preview some of the .-x files, but not all. I wonder if it's due to the way I save them or what. Anyway I'd like to know why I can't see all of them with QL.

In response to the problem with Mail crashing when you drag attachments to the dock, I can almost guarantee that the questioner has the following setup:
1. Messages are set to be created in Plaintext
2. Signature is set to automatically be added
It's a known bug in 10.5 Mail that has aggravated me and many others, and is 100% reproducible. Set your default message format to plaintext, add a plaintext signature and try to drag an attachment to the Mail dock icon.
It'll crash, everytime. Very irritating!

Hello, I'm on a MacBook (last gen, black) running Leopard 10.5.4. Can you indicate a good antivirus for me? If possible a free one. I've read about ClamAV but it hasn't been updated in a while. Thanks!

In Mail.app, open the Activity Window (Window->Activity or Command-0), and you can stop all network activity. Then delete the offending email message.

@Allison
the same thing happened to me. the way i fixed it was by switching the channel of the wifi. i think that mine was on 6, but i changed it to 11, or vice versa. You have to do that through the wifi router setup software. apparently, my macbook has a stronger wifi antennae, so it was able to pick up the signal through all the interference, but the ipod couldn't pick it up. also, make sure you go to reset in the settings, and reset your network settings. hope that helps.

In regards to the dragging a file to the Mail.app dock icon to attach to a new message - I believe this problem is related to WebKit in some way. This issue appeared after a Safari update, and has not been fixed since.
The issue only occurs if your message format is set to 'Plain Text'. The current 'fix' is to change your Composing options to 'Rich Text'.
I have filed a bug report this behaviour, but it came back as duplicate, so I believe Apple are aware of this problem. Here is hoping for a proper fix to be released soon.

Actually, the article is false in regards to getting a 1st gen iPhone. You can take your 1st gen iPhone to an Apple Store and asked for it to be repaired. They will tell you the screen crack puts your phone out of it's warranty, but you can have it replaced for a $249 charge.
I did that this weekend with a severely damaged 16gb original iPhone I bought from a guy. I saw it was under warranty, asked about repair, and was told by the Genius at the B'ham Apple Store I could have it repaired for a $249 charge. They pulled one from the back and I was good to go! (I don't know if it was brand new or refurbished -- but it came from a retail box and had all the plastic still wrapped around it. It doesn't have a single blemish on it.)
So Frank, if you're close to an Apple Store, go by and ask them to have it repaired. The worst thing they can tell you is no. And $249 at your current data rates is cheaper than $199 at the new rates.

thanks, TUAW (and thank you, DrHogie) for answering my question about my 1st gen phone. i neglected to mention in my question that on the day i dropped it, i had had my phone for a year and a month at that point -- just past the warranty date, of course! i've been continuing to use it in its shattered state. it still works fine, it just breaks my heart a little every time i turn it on. i've been calling it my "anti theft feature", haha. i figure i'll just use it as-is until in can find a decent price for one on ebay, like you suggest.

Hi Frank. My sister dropped her iPhone and shattered the glass. I bought a replacement piece (not OEM) for $18 from this guy: http://stores.ebay.com/joeweiderx_Apple-iPhone_iPhone-2G_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ224637619QQftidZ2QQtZkm and it's just like new. Came with all the tools you need. The video to disassemble the iPhone is on YouTube.

Is there any way without jailbreaking to display my upcoming Calendar events on the lock screen on my iPhone (2.0.1)? This is the one feature I miss from Windows Mobile, and I'm not going to jailbreak for just that one feature (as well, all the solutions I've found aren't free and I just don't see the point in spending money on a program that might very well be rendered unusable after an update).
I've thought about writing an app that does this myself, and I certainly wouldn't mind learning Objective-C and the iPhone SDK, but the NDA (as far as I know) prohibits me from seeking help and further the process of the ad-hoc distribution seems mighty confusing (do you still have to pay the $99 fee if you're not submitting it to the App Store but want it on your phone?).

@Stan-O
You may want to look at Google Sketch-Up, it's no AutoCAD but it still a very powerful tool for creating 3-D rendition models for construction or whatever you choose to do.

I have the white 24" Intel Mac, and I have been looking at upgrading the RAM to its max and I'm not sure what would be the recommended configuration to get the maximum performance. I know that I can two paired 2GB sticks in the slots, but it is my understanding that the motherboard can only address up to 3GB total (is there a way to change this? firmware update maybe?), and I can't buy two 1.5GB paired since such a thing doesn't exist. Should I just get 1 - 1GB and 1 - 2GB and call it a day or do you think I should do the 2 - 2GB thing? What is different from the newer Aluminum iMac which allow up to 4GB, that was present in the white iMac?

With regards to Lightroom, it doesn't play nice with Spaces. I have to switch manually to Space 2, where I have it bound, even though there are no open windows in Space 1. Adobe, please fix.

I have a question for next time, please:
I have an iPhone (1st gen), and a MacBook running Leopard. It surprised me to find recently that if I connect them over bluetooth, the iPhone doesn't list any services as available.
Where I was hoping to reach was the ability to select a phone number in Mail, or a web browser, on my Mac and "Dial from my iPhone" - which would instruct the iPhone to dial over bluetooth.
(Otherwise, I just have to type the number in manually ... sigh ...)
Is there any way to achieve this, either natively, or through third party apps?
Thanks,
NeilS.
P.S. Sending SMSes from the desktop would be good, too!

While it costs a little bit of money, I believe BluePhoneElite is perfect for what you want.
