Reminder: Free iPod education promo ends Sept. 15

College

Just a reminder: We told you in June about Apple's education promotion where you can get a free 8GB iPod touch (worth $299) to college students who buy a MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, or Mac Pro. The promotion ends in just over a month, on September 15.

If you haven't placed your order yet, it's probably a good time to get your act in gear.

Note also that from the reports we've seen, iPod touch is not shipping with the 2.0 software update pre-loaded yet. So you'll have to shell out ten bucks for the software update.

Qualified students can also opt for an 8GB iPod nano.

On Sunday's talkcast, we figured it was all-but-certain that new iPod touch models and possibly laptops will drop right after this promotion ends. Keep that in mind, too.

My mom gets a teacher discount!

Good thing I am taking advantage of this offer. Getting my first iMac and getting an iPod Touch! Hope it comes with the 2.0 upgrade...Or I get it free. I have a $10 gift card that I want to blow on apps!

I'm planning on buying a new MacBook Pro but the decision to go for this deal or hold out for an updated version is killing me!

I feel for you! Same here! I don't know what to do, maybe the upgrades will be so great that they will cancel out this promotion..

When did this start in the UK last year, anybody? We actually tend to get it just after the new models are announced, but I think it's still the old models that are in the program.

What are the chances a small iMac upgrade drops before the promotion is over?

The rebate was in my checking account before the computer and iPod arrived, in late June. You don't (this year, anyway) have to submit a UPC, or even a printed form. It was all done online.

That's because you probably purchased them both from Apple's online store, no?

if you order online what do you have to submit for your rebate to apple for the educational sale? Do you need a copy of where you go to school, etc?

You have to submit your student info before you can access the on-line Education Store. That usually means giving your school name and your student number. Presumably they have a way of verifying that your student number corresponds to a valid and active student.

That's how you get the student prices. You buy the iPod and Mac (at the student price) then you send away for your iPod rebate. The rebate application includes a photocopy of the Mac and iPod receipts you get when they ship them to you, and the UPC code cut out of the iPod box. I forget if they wanted anything more than that (like a photocopy of your student ID).
