AppleInsider: Mac OS X 10.5.5 hits 9F13

AppleInsider reports that the Mac OS X team is squashing ever more bugs, and has released version 10.5.5 build 9F13 to developers. Unlike prior builds, Apple released it without any known issues.

The article notes that Apple has made 115 corrections to Mac OS X code as a part of the 10.5.5 update. Improvements to power management, mail sync, preferences sync, networking, firewall, kernel, file system, and the Mobile Me preferences pane are all expected to be included.

AppleInsider expected that the update would be released to the public in "the coming weeks."

Here's my wish list:

* Time Machine wouldn't randomly fail with the generic "An error occurred while copying files..." error.
* Typing speeds wouldn't randomly slow to a crawl or stop.
* Similar to above, general performance of the system would be improved (H.264 videos used to run smoothly and could easily be scrubbed through in 10.5.1, now they skip even while playing back at regular speed).
* Random Finder crashes. Seriously, what gives? The Finder is mature, it should be the most solid service/program running.

Fix these, and we're golden.

And before people start flaming me, yes it's a clean OS X install. Look around forums and you'll find people experiencing similar issues, just not a lot of people. The small sample of reports do not make these wishes any less valid.

Skipping when you play videos may be caused by the recent update to QuickTime 7.5, which caused nightmares to so many users and to me in particular as it has made iMovie 6 virtually unusable as the playback is so juddery. Lets hope they fix in 10.5.5.

if this means that we can see the end of persistent Airport scanning on wireless networks, well then this update can't come fast enough.

Every dot dot brings a more solid Leopard. Keep up the good work Apple Engineers.

I'm curious if 10.5.5 will FINALLY squash the bug which unmounts CDs immediately after mounting them. 10.5.4 was supposed to have fixed this, but it still happens regularly. I can remount the discs with Disk Utility, but that's a kludge. The problem should not exist at all.

Maybe I should wait to throw out all my POP3 accounts in Mail.app and replace them with my one MobileME IMAP account, until 10.5.5 is out - just to avoid some of the current IMAP bugs (I wonder which ones, but apparently there are some bugs since they can smash'em)

Well, I wouldn't expect it to come "in the previous weeks"
