Apple seeds Safari 4.0 dev preview 2
Apple has started seeding developers with Safari 4.0 preview 2. You may recall that the last developer preview was issued in June after the WWDC.Safari 4.0 DP2 has a build number of 40A12. Just like the last build, this edition scored a perfect 100/100 on the Acid3 test. Developers with access to the Apple Connect website can download Safari 4.0 preview 2 for Mac OS X Leopard, Tiger, and for Windows.
The new version gives users the option to save web pages as an application that can be launched independently of Safari (similar in concept to the SSBs Prism and Fluid). There is no word on when Safari 4.0 might be released to the public.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

12 hours?! What a long time! That's almost years!

I sent a tip in about the August 22 released seed and no one even gave it a second thought. I sent it twice.

I've given them at least 3 stories before any other site has posted it before, once almost a day before, and they've never ever posted it. I've supplied all the needed information, and anything that they need to confirm it, and yet they do not post it.
I've completely given up about tipping TUAW now, and I send my tips to MacRumors and Engadget.

I've sent them comments before many times about the whole Zbrush Mac debacle.

Nothing published yet....I think companies like Pixologic would think twice about screwing with their customers if they started getting some bad press.

Hopefully they'll add an option to make Flash not suck as much.

Maybe Apple can come up with something cool and new... like a new light over Flash. a light of silver! Wouldn't that be cool? A new standard that doesn't work with any actionscript apps and could be called Silverlight. Or something. I don't know...

@Think Adrian
You're crazy.

@Think Adrian
Yes, a new "standard." Or, actually, a new proprietary technology. Joy of joys. And don't gimme that crap about its XML-loving nature. Flash does that too, plus Actionscript is based on ECMAscript, and it's still proprietary.

It's called SproutCore (also known as "Cocoa for the web"). It's what powers the MobileMe web interface, and is entirely standards based.

The old Safari 4.0 beta could also make webapps that ran indipendantly, so what's so new about this one.

Just installed and it did the same thing as you. Unistalled right away before even using Safari 4.
RJToronto said 9:26PM on 8-25-2008
Same thing happened to me as well. It rendered my Mail app unusable, but once I removed Safari 4, things were back to normal.

I just downloaded Safari with Safari.

All I want is real search plugin capability. Inquisitor is great for a kluge, but it's far more complicated than Firefox's searchers.

Fair warning to cutting edge users: this latest version will cause RSS Visualizer screen savers to freeze and crash System Preferences.

I wish I had read your post before I installed the new Safari 4. I spent all day trying to figure out what went wrong. It was after an archive and install and then reinstalling Safari 4 that it dawned on me what the cause must have been. I just uninstalled it and reverted back to Safari 3.1.2 and the problem is gone. Next time, I'll check the forums before being so eager to try out a new build of Safari.

All I want to know is when they'll be enabling chrome-less web apps on Mobile Safari.
Well, ok, I guess I'm a little excited about SquirrelFish, but not quite as much.
