Five iPhone apps for football junkies
With apologies to our friends across the pond who have their own take on what "football" really is, the first full day of a new season of American football got underway yesterday with a whole host of league games that stretched late into the night. The only thing better than watching a football game is having some really cool football-related apps on your iPhone or iPod touch while you watch. Keep reading to learn more about my favorite five apps.
Pro Football Live - Here's where to go for all the latest updates, scores, and news around the NFL. Customize your own page to the upcoming schedules of your favorite teams and the latest photos from around the league. Individual team page give great breakdowns of team and individual stats on every game -- including preseason. If you're a stats junkie, this is the app for you.
Fantasy Football Cheatsheet '08 - Keep track of everything that's going down with your players and team with this cool app. It's got the rankings of 400 players and their defenses, so you can easily through data while you assemble your draft wish list. Search players by name or team, and choose the My Team tab for instant info on how your players are doing. Sweet.
AP Top25 College Football 2008 - Not strictly related to the NFL, of course, but how else would I keep track of how well West Virginia played (or not) this week, and how those Heisman candidates are looking? Use this app to get weekly AP poll info, view team progress and scores, get rankings, and even view photos of recent games.
Paper Football Lite - Jonesing for a football fix but stuck at the office? Play a few quick rounds of Paper Football instead. It's not the same thing as a fun game of pickup in the backyard, but it'll do in a pinch.Don't have an iPod touch or iPhone? Not to worry, I've got you covered.
UPDATE: I pulled an app at the last minute and, as an eagled-eyed reader who counts better than I noticed, that knocks the count down to four. For an extra App-By-Default, check out comment #4. :-)

Count much? That's only four.

Well, hell. I pulled one at the last minute after it didn't work as promised and i forgot to change the title. Good thing the NFL doesn't rely on me to score games (or the Colts SO would have won last night ;-).

Thanks for this Lisa - I really wish there was something like mlb.com @ bat for the NFL. Living outside the US makes it hard (or expensive, www.nfl.com/gamepass/ ) if I wanted to keep up to date with my team.
I would quite happily pay for the software if it measured up to the MLB application.

I totally agree with Stu. Where's the NFL version of MLB.com at Bat?! I would gladly pay for that app as well.

Sprint has NFL exclusivity so I am sure we will not be seeing any official apps from them like the MLB.com app

As the author of a football-themed iPhone app, I've got a handy replacement that you can tack on to the end of your list. It's only really useful for Tennessee Vols fans, but it would at least bump the list count back up to five. :)

Ya, so - in tonight's game ... I'm thinking Broncos by 12 and Al Davis has a stroke at halftime. And then the Raider fans file out of the stadium looking like fools once again.

Is there an app that lets you track your fantasy teams? Seems like every fantasy app just helps out with your draft. Pointless once the season starts....

I googled this "american football" but must have clicked on the wrong link - all I could find was information on another game, where you use your hands?

The fantasy football sites are really behind the times on this. Yahoo or ESPN could put out an app and charge $10 and sell tons. I do Yahoo and the flashbased stattracker is nice but nothing for my iPhone!

It'd be nice if there were a CFL app that would have live scores. It was pretty agonizing refreshing espn.com hoping the Mountaineers would come back and win on Saturday

I sincerely hope that sentence is tongue-in-cheek; considering your (American) version of football is derived from the British developed game, not vice versa...

Why won't CBS Sportsline, Yahoo, and ESPN come out with their own Fantasy Apps??? It'd be so amazing to be able to log directly into an iPhone App that uses my login information to show me details like Current Score, Injuries, News Updates, etc .... Would be frickin amazing!!
