Terminal Tips: Disable iTunes 8 store arrows
Last week we talked about how to modify the iTunes track arrows to point to the library instead of the music store. With the introduction of iTunes 8 yesterday, this hack no longer works (it will still work if you stick with iTunes 7.x). However, you can easily remove the iTunes store links entirely, if you prefer. Just open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities) and enter the following command: defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-arrow-links -bool FALSE
When you re-launch iTunes, the links will be gone. To get things back to normal, just replace "FALSE" with "TRUE."[via Mac OS X Hints]

It works, but you need to enter defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-arrow-links FALSE

Why go in to terminal? Isn't there an option in iTunes prefs to remove the store links? - I guess doing it in terminal is more fun? Def not easier.

No, that option is gone in iTunes 8, that's the whole point.

@Dan - as macosxhints pointed out yesterday (and tuaw copied today, albeit not without mentioning the source) this option is no longer available in iTunes 8, so you DO need to go into the Terminal and type the above command (which was discovered by macosxhints' Rob Griffiths and Kirk McElhearn yesterday and is now so aptly repeated by tuaw).

Thank God I can get rid of that now. Those arrows are obnoxious.

"defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-arrow-links -bool FALSE"
This doesn't work for me at all. I still get the links.

I don't get it- the hack that worked in iTunes 7.x to modify the arrows' behavior and point to the local library instead of the iTunes store works fine in iTunes 8.
The hack simply made it easier to point to your local library- the alternative was to hold down the option key while clicking to get the same result. Optionally, if the terminal hack WAS enabled, holding the option key while clicking took you to the Apple store.
That terminal hack is:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes invertStoreLinks -bool YES
Still works. What am I not getting?

Disabling the iTunes Store in the Parental Controls also removes the arrows. I don't use iTMS so I always keep it disabled.

Anyone else notice that the "Show genre when browsing." option is now gone? I'm stuck with always looking at genres!
Override?
