Can someone explain why they'd want a Mac OS X server as opposed to just a beefed up server running Ubuntu or something like that? I mean, I love Mac OS as a desktop operating system, it's superb. But for servers, I much prefer Debian and Ubuntu, the package management system is incredible. What's the advantage of Mac OS Server over one of the Linux distros?

I think the biggest advantage is that it works good with other Macs without a bunch of configuration -- especially technologies like Spotlight, Software Update (when it works... see my other comment), and Time Machine. If you aren't running Macs on your network, the advantages go down, but you still get the benefit of an easier to manage server.

Tell me how to Netboot and NetImage/NetRestore a Mac without an XServe and then we'll talk. Until then, Apple servers are where it's at.

OpenDirectory, managed preferences, Software Update Server. That is the only use I have for our OS X server in our all mac office, ironically all the other servers are in fact beefed up Ubuntu servers as you mention :)

I dunno if it was fixed in 10.5.4 or 10.5.5, but the Software Update server looks like it works now. I haven't been able to get it to start since 10.5 and even then, it would lose track of what it had downloaded once or twice a day.

I'm happy. This update finally made my "Back to My Mac" start working. It's been a long, long, long, time waiting for that promise to actually come to fruition.

Has anyone found the 10.5.5 Server Admin Tools Installer?
Like they mention here... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2667
Post a link if you find it, much appreciated!

Ummm... you provided a URL to a page which then points right to it. You did actually READ that page, yes?
On the page you reference, try visiting the "Apple Support Downloads" link in the summary paragraph at the top of the page, then note that Server Admin Tools 10.5.5 is listed (at least as I write this at ~12:30PM EDT) right at the top of the list.

Thanks for the update...
I actually did read it and click the link, they just hadn't actually posted the download yet even though that page has been up since yesterday afternoon and it still hadn't been posted when I checked earlier this morning.
Just have to be a little patient I guess

Actually, I meant to thank you for mentioning that there was an update at all for Server Admin Tools. I recently deployed two XServes, so I'll be needing that as well. :-)
