Today Apple released an update for Mac OS X's RAW compatibility.
iPhoto '08 and
Aperture will now be able to work with RAW formats from the following cameras:
- Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/Kiss Digital F/1000D
- Kodak DCS Pro SLR/n
- Nikon D700
- Olympus EVOLT E-420
- Olympus EVOLT E-520
- Olympus SP-570
- Samsung GX-10
- Samsung GX-20
- Sony DSLR-A300
- Sony DSC-R1
I'm sure this isn't a fix for everyone, but will probably make most photographers happy to see their camera on the list. You can download this update by opening Software Update (Apple menu > Software Update) or by visiting Apple's
downloads website and downloading the installer package.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Still no Nikon D90 support. I just tried it with iPhoto and Aperture. Didn't work.

Looking at their customers and their reputation I find these RAW updates extremly important for Apple to be up to date. It's a shame how long it sometimes takes to get certain raws to work

I'm somewhat surprised to see the DSC-R1 finally listed among the udpates. I had given up hope, particularly considering this particular camera was discontinued by Sony over two years ago.

Me too and that's one of the reasons I got an Alpha. And I converted all the DSC-R1 RAWS to JPGS only a few months back :-(

I'm all for supporting more formats, but why the heck would a file format update require a system restart after installation? RAW support isn't exactly a low-level system function, is it? Grrrr. I hate unnecessary restarts.

There is sill a big hole in the legacy support though.
I have 10,000 Canon Powershot G2 Raw files that are unsupported, which still ties me to Photoshop. Shame as I quite like Aperture and was going to buy it. Still wait in hope they will fix it one day.

I have the Sony a700. After updating to 2.2, all cRAW images show up in Aperture, as if the Magenta channel of a cmyk image was being displayed. I discovered a fix for it, by rolling back to 2.1.

I am having the same problem!!! How were you able to roll back to 2.1 when I tried it told me that I already have the 2.2 and it just shuts down...

You need to go to HD/System/Library/CoreServices and delete "RawCamera.bundle". Then download the Raw 2.1 update from Adobe or Apple, and install it. When you restart Aperture/iPhoto all your previously magenta photos, will be normal again. I have noticed that some of the thumbnails in Aperture are still showing as Magenta on my Mac Pro, but viewing the image at full size, is fine. I have to find out how to regenerate new thumbnails in Aperture.
