Realmac teases LittleSnapper

Our friends over at at Realmac Software, makers of the popular RapidWeaver website creation app, have just posted some information on their next Mac app, LittleSnapper. From what I can glean from the promo page, LittleSnapper -- which is expected sometime at the end of 2008 -- is designed to be the ultimate mash-up of screenshot applications like Skitch and Paparazzi.

Back in May, I tested and reviewed various (static) screen capturing programs and options for OS X. Although I did not have a chance to actually address the issue of full web page captures in that article, I was, and continue to be frustrated by the lack of a good, Leopard-friendly program that can capture an entire web site, and not just the portion that appears on the screen. Stitching together screenshots in Photoshop is time consuming and unfortunately, Paparazzi's Leopard support is kludgy (.43 works with Leopard, but .5 won't even open). I demoed Web Snapper, but it is a Safari plugin (or InputManager for the semantically correct), which is not always ideal.

From the Realmac website, it looks like LittleSnapper is really designed to take the best aspects of a program like Skitch, the ability to capture portions of the screen and annotate and share with other people, with the ability to work with web browsers and also organize screenshot libraries. They even show off a DOM-highlighter, so you can instantly capture a specific element of a site, much like Safari's WebClip and CSSEdit's Inspector.

We'll let you know more about LittleSnapper as the details eke out. You can sign-up for updates at Realmac's website. LittleSnapper will be a Leopard-only application.

I've used Screengrab for a while to capture whole webpages. It's a Firefox plug in and works great on any system.

WebSnapper *has* a Safari plug-in, but you can also use it stand-alone, dragging URLs onto it.

Also, another great FireFox plugin for full page screenshots is ScreenGrab.

Websnapper has the HUGE advantage of keeping the URLs within the screenshot. I've not found any other program that can do this on any platform or browser. It even lets you grab 'logged into' pages, so you can grab clickable screenshots from ANY page within Safari (it even grabs Flash sites, although the page links are not always clickable within the screenshot).

For Firefox, Pearl Crescent (http://pearlcrescent.com/products/pagesaver/) is an easy option for grabbing whole pages (I then wack'em into Skitch).

I still use SnapzPro X for grabbing most stuff around my screen though.

Printing to PDF is OK, but seems to rely on the CSS, so if a site has print specific CSS, it seems to print the style instead of exactly how things really look.

SnapzPro is always promising 'full screen' grabs for websites - fingers crossed. On a PC, the best thing I've used was CaptureWiz - a bit ugly, but very easy to use.

If you really are still stiching things together in Photoshop, you really need to install some of these things.

If using firefox, try the Fireshot extension for grabbing full web pages. I have found it useful:

This looks amazing. It's like Skitch/delicious and iTunes, only for the designers' visual bookmarks!

It's been a while since I have used the feature but cant you just print the web-page to a PDF using OSX's built in printing utility? If you wanted to convert it to a different format you could just open it in Preview and save it as something else. Plus Preview has a lot of editing options built in too. It's free and easy and it works well. Just a thought.

Saving a page as a PDF doesn't work very well. It splits the files sometimes, removes graphics, screws with the text flow and more...

The Screengrab! Firefox extension works perfectly, but obviously you must be using Firefox.
