First look: Earthscape
This morning I took a stroll through the free bin in the App Store and found Earthscape [App Store link here] was, for a limited time, offered as a free download (it is now back to $4.99). I would pay a couple of bucks for Earthscape, although it isn't much more than a neat tech demo and didn't appear to serve any practical purpose. It is neat, but not essential. The app is like a miniature version of Google Earth, minus street maps and not quite as "3D" or functional.

This is pretty hot. I actually downloaded the earthscape desktop when it was available in beta at this year's Where 2.0. Actually liked it a lot better than Google Earth, was faster, had a nicer search, nice transition between historical imagery, social networking, it had all the international imagery...it'll be interesting to see where they go with the iphone application and if they can port all the stuff they had on their desktop app.

It is not useful as a local map without street names. Its entertainment value is limited because only the USA is represented with any detail.
I bought Earthscape the day it was released for more than its current price in the App store. Since then the company has made two changes in order to make it sell better: reducing the price and changing its name from "Earthscape Basic" to just "Earthscape." However the function everybody wants, the ability to search, is still missing.
I think everyone agrees the software is very attractive. This could become a mini version of Google Earth but it would need a complete rethink and probably more investment than its creators could manage.
Hi Chris:
Actually, I downloaded earthscape on the desktop during Where 2.0. It is actually much more intense than google earth, makes google earth look very 1.0. I'm thinking that the port to the iphone is pretty complicated. I'm not sure when they will be offering the desktop again but it was awesome. As a geogeek, I'll be pretty interested to see what they do with this...
It sure would be nice to see Google make a "Google Earth" app for the iPhone. The Touch interface would propel that application to a place it has never been before, only paving the way for the Google Earth app to run on the MacBook touch. I have said too much. :-)

I just nabbed it. I don't have a touch yet but I want to get some of these awesome apps before they go away. I got Tris a couple days before it's day of destruction. I wish I could of gotten that light saber app though.

September 18 2008 at 7:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI nabbed this last night when it was still free, I'm glad I did, it's really fun to play around with, although I'm not sure I'd pay for it. Definitely a cool little toy to show off to your friends.
