OmniWeb 5.8 released
The Omni Group has released version 5.8 of OmniWeb, its venerable browser software.
OmniWeb 5.8 is now based on the same version of Webkit as Safari 3.1.x. It also fixes bugs with Spaces, and adds support for non-POSIX file URLs. Users can also choose Google Chrome in the list of user-agent strings. Full release notes are also available.
OmniWeb 5.8 is available from Omni's website, and works with Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later. The software is $14.95, with upgrades starting at $4.95 for users of Omniweb 4.

I find being able to make a search shortcut out of any searchbox anywhere on the web (including things as obscure as the online phone directory for my local county government) is really, really helpful. Worth my $15, anyways.

you can easily do this in firefox too. In any search box, right click and select "Add a keyword for this search".
from there you can name the shortcut and set the keyword.
enter the following inthe address bar to search:
keyword searchterm

Very nice. The main reasons I keep coming back to OW is the excellent text rendering. Safari is good here too, but OW adds other features out-of-the-box, like site preferences, workspaces, and ad blocking.

Is it me, or is Omniweb a butt-ugly application that looks like it's stuck in the OS X 10.0 era?

I agree. It looks powerful, but is in serious need of a ui redesign.

No, it's not you. OmniWeb is long-in-the-tooth no matter how you look at it. It's features are old, the GUI is old, and the idea that you can charge for a Web browser is, well... Actually, has anyone other than OmniWeb and Opera ever charged for a browser?

Your grammar is not venerable.
"it's venerable browser software" --> "its venerable browser software"

Thanks for that catch ... I'm having problems with apostrophes lately, it appears.

They still make this? Did I just go into a time warp?
