I get scared installing new versions of things like Perian since everything I do with it right now works, but maybe I'll check this out... thanks for the tip TUAW.

September 29 2008 at 8:43 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPerian seemed like a great idea until I used it. I noticed my HD videos were dropping frames like crazy. It turns out that Perian uses its own H.264 codec which does not utilize multiple processors or the GPU like QuickTime. So I went from perfect playback to a stuttering mess. Almost all the other codecs it supports are things I never come across with anymore. So watch out.
I find that QuickTime with Flip4Mac and VLC gets the job done now just fine.
Wait, so does Perian's H.264 codec take over even for straight up H.264 encoded .mov files? If so, why don't they just let quicktime take care of H.264 if quicktime is better at decoding and just have Perian handle H.264 wrapped in .MKV or whatever + all the rest of the odd-ball codec.

Not sure if this is the iDVD frame-skipping issues I experienced earlier. When you have Perian installed and create a DVD from iDVD, the result disk is "choppy" when played back. Uninstalling perian solved it.
But it's a pain to not have perian installed...
Unknown, likely so. It could certainly cause it.
September 29 2008 at 6:30 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's great to see Perian continuing to move forward as the definitive choice for most codecs on the Mac. The momentary freezes experienced with embedded fonts are gone and I'm a happy camper.
September 29 2008 at 5:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyJust a tip re: anamorphic videos not playing properly (stretched or squished) in QT: if this happens, you can hold opt-shift while resizing the QT window to force QT not to honor the current aspect ratio. This way you can compensate (by eye, of course) for stretched or squished video.

When you play a video in Front Row with SRT subtitles present, the screen goes black (ever since Leopard 10.5) while sound continues.
VideoDrive (www.aroona.net) has a nice workaround for this bug, but it would still be cool if it was entirely fixed.
Naruto finally works. Yay.

September 29 2008 at 5:17 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat is up with TUAW today? First the article on the three most basic terminal commands that are useless if that's all you know, and now release notes for a program that gets practically no other description than it's name? Seriously lame.
September 29 2008 at 5:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIn all fairness it does say 'quicktime plug in' and 'mkv support' and 'avi support', just fill in the blanks.
September 29 2008 at 6:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis article was very useful to me. I use Perian and didn't know there'd been an update. Maybe it's you who has the problem, not TUAW or the rest of us.
