iPod touch survives run-in with pickup truck
While the iPod nano is being called fragile, the iPod touch is ready to demonstrate its toughness.A user at the iPod touch Fans forums posted pictures of his touch after being run over by a pickup truck. The glass screen is shattered but intact, and the back of the case is dented. However, it still works. "It worked perfectly, the touch screen, the music, the wifi..." writes forlorn owner spongyiq.
He claims that siding a finger across the busted display "...doesn't hurt," but we'll just take his word on it.
While we're on the subject, here's a few other pieces of Apple hardware that met a cruel fate:
- Nano meets highway traffic, fares poorly
- Great balls of PowerBook fire
- iPod sets man's pants on fire
- Shattered iPhone, still works

Transparent Scotch Tape will reduce finger bleeding while keeping the screen in place...

Can't say I'm surprised it doesn't hurt. I dropped my Touch a while back and you can barely feel the giant spiderweb crack through the middle.

Makes sense that there's no pain or injury from touching the broken glass. Some types of glass are designed to fail such that they don't shatter into sharp pieces that could hurt you, like car window glass. This is done partly via the use of coatings. I believe the phone's screen has a coating on it, though I'm not 100% sure, most likely as part of sensing where it's being touched. So you are probably touching this coating, not the actual glass, which is why you aren't getting hurt.
That said, don't mess around with sharps. If you have any reason at all to believe that that screen's not safe, either get the screen replaced or get a new ipod. Glass is dangerous stuff and you can get deep cuts from even a small piece.

No surprise- they build them tough. Dropped my iPhone on tiles 2 weeks ago (waiting for insurance to give me the replacement- Thursday, w00t). Everything worked perfectly, but sif have crack in screen?

I've got one with dead innards, but a good case and glass. He can have the parts if he wants to fix it (better than land-filling it).

Do you know what I'd like... an app that will make my iPhone/iPod Touch screen look like this.

How is it that so many people end up having phones and iPods run over? It seems a little too common. Certainly that it is probably more sensational that dropping the thing in the toilet, but I see way more reports of things getting crushed by cars...
Are they leaving their electronics laying there in the driveway?

This reminds me of a few nights ago when my dad destroyed my PowerBook G3. Many people say the Pismo was one of the sturdiest laptops Apple ever made, and I would agree with that. It survived many drops, but the repeated throwing of it on a hard marble floor finally did it in. It did not survive. The pieces are still in my closet, in a big bag. A moment of silence please...

My 1st gen iPhone fell from my pocket on a rollercoaster (Superman at Gurney Six Flags) and survived with hardly a scratch. They had to mail it to me once they found it in the grounds.

this reminds me of my girlfriend's ipod nano 1st gen. a couple years ago. she bought this ipod and she forgot to take it out on her jacket and her sister put it on the laundry. when the cycle was done and about to put it on the dryer her sister found the ipod completely submerge. her sister said that she can even see the water on the screen. her sister panic cause its just barely a month old ipod. guess what she did? she put it on the dryer to get rid of the water. she took it out from dryer tried it but its completely dead. her sister give it back to her and tell her the story and said sorry. she took it and put it on her drawer and then after a week when she was cleaning she came across with the ipod she tried it one more time before throwing it away. guess what happen? it turns on with all the music intact and battery looks fine. its is completely fine and she is still using up to this time.
