New product announcement cancelled? (updated)
According to one of our tipsters, the "kickoff webcast" that Christina mentioned over the weekend has been either delayed or cancelled.
A link distributed to webcast participants is, according to the tipster, no longer working. The webcast was scheduled for 10 a.m. Pacific time.
What does this mean for the rumored "Brick"? It's difficult to say. Apple does tend to make product announcements on Tuesdays, but I suppose there's no reason why Apple couldn't deliver the webcast anytime between today and the product's scheduled launch date.
Also, it could be that our tipster is just suffering network problems. If you know more about the webcast, please tip us! Your anonymity is our guarantee.
Thanks, Matt!
Update: Another anonymous tipster wrote in to tell us that the webcast did proceed as scheduled, but did not discuss new products (only things like metrics for the next quarter, and marketing strategies for Black Friday in the United States). The tipster said the password for the webcast was changed a day or two ago, which was probably why Tipster Matt couldn't connect.
Thanks, Apple Reseller!

So what Apple did was set up a fake event, told a small number of people, canceled it, and now know roughly who's leaking stuff....

I'm going with this one. Seems just maniacal enough.

Damn, a web-keynote!? That's some major bandwidth.

You really think Apple is going to release a completely new product via a webcast... Come on don't be stupid. Apple's 4th quarter product catalog is set, done, complete. There isn't going to be anything new this year. At best there will be updated notebooks in the same form factor.

exactly, when was the last time Apple did any sort of keynote with a live webcast? 2001, 2002, I think, and they online like one of them before they realized it was a bandwidth monster.

As Christina mentioned, the webcast was just for resellers, and not for the general public.

Hey...we can all hope for an AppleTV replacement, don't break my heart just yet...

I wouldn't expect Apple to release a new product before the Holidays, and there's a few reasons.
1) Economic climate & timing. Now is not the time to throw your big guns forward, as most the country seems all caught up in financial hypothetical meltdown. Holding off a new product for some possible tweaking might benefit Apple in the long run, despite having a weaker Holiday sales.
2) Maybe its not ready. It wouldn't be far-fetched for El Jobso to pull a product at the last second cause he wasn't happy with it, or a number of other reasons. The last thing we want is another kerfuffle launch.
3) Lack of media attention. Its almost given that the notebooks will get a refresh of some sort soon, and it'd be hard to manage a presentation of both that highly expected event and a new product, unless that product was minor in nature (think time capsule)
Least. that's my thoughts..

The best course of action at this point would be to delete this entire entry on TUAW and pretend it was never here.

hype - good job apple. or, the webcast basically said, you leak stuff. steve will find and eat you!
seriously - "aggressive price point" - something will come and here's why:
here's a perspective. apple caters to a "wealthier niche." therefore, even in tough times, their customers will still buy great products. Why? Because they can. The typical mac customer (not iphone or ipod), has disposable income. Even if it's not much, the desire to have the latest and greatest is a burning sensation that can only be associated with the passion to wage a war for a woman!
we'll see some new gear before year's end, and it will be at "an agressive price point!"

I guess I am one of those. I want (not need) a new laptop, but i am holding out for a new mbp. I can only just afford one with my disposable income, but it isnt a great deal of disposable income.
Well thats just my 2cents before I set off on my private jet to go and spend a week on my island. ;)
