Blast from the Past: Lunatic Fringe

If you're a long-time Mac user, the words "After Dark" conjure memories of flying toasters, Star Trek, city lights, and -- my favorite -- Lunatic Fringe.

Lunatic Fringe was a Maelstrom-like game built-in to After Dark, a screen saver utility for Mac and Windows popular in the early- to mid-90s. Fringe Player, from Sealie Software, is a app that brings Lunatic Fringe back to your new, Intel-based Mac. It supports Leopard, and there is a version for PowerPC processors as well.

You have to obtain the original screensaver module separately, however. You can get the module from your original After Dark disks (or online, if you're clever with the Google.)

Now if you'll excuse me, my Friday afternoon is suddenly spoken for.

I could, but I think I would rather not try to remember how much of my life I lost to this game!

That brings back memories. A complete After Dark port to OS X would be fun and all, but for now... where are my flying toasters?

Awesome. This was the real reason why keyboards had caps lock keys!

I too wish someone would port the original AD modules. Bungie Jumping Cows.... B&W toasters... much more fun than putting your computer to sleep!

I remember there was a glitch in the game, if you used the shield and then thrusted into the main base that the bad guys came out of you could get stuck in part of it making you invinciable (but still able to shoot stuff).

Somebody needs to create a Universal OS X port of After Dark that can play all the old modules. If Lunatic Fringe can work in Leopard I'm sure all of the others can...

Amen to that! And while they're at it, port it all over to the iPhone/touch. I'd love to see the Star Trek expansion too...

Geez, no link love, Robert?
The After Dark I found (AD X + Fish) doesn't work with Leopard.
Am I going to have to fire up my G3 iMac to revel in nostalgia?

does it still have the feature where you move your mouse out of your sleep corner and start over?

I loved this game. After Dark was amazing. Every kid with a mac would copy stuff off of the school computers and bring them home. After Dark, Sim City and Lunar Lander were enough to make me happy for a long time.

Wow this is amazing, I spent far too much time as a 10 year old on this game.
