Perian 1.1.2 released, fixes updating
Last night, Perian was updated to version 1.1.2. If you need to extend the capabilities of QuickTime, the free Perian plugin allows QuickTime to play back all kinds of popular video formats (.AVI, .MKV, .FLV and more). It's a handy utility for anyone who watches a lot of video on their Mac. Here's a list of the bug fixes/improvements in 1.1.2:
- Fixed update checker never running - this version requires a manual install
- Enabled frame-dropping on AppleTV
- Fixed some frames being lost in AVCHD/.mp4 with newer versions of QuickTime
- Fixed another ffmpeg crash on G3s
Thanks for the tip, Chris!

If you hacked your AppleTV and installed the previous version of Perian (so you could play back videos and audio encoded in different formats than the officially Apple blessed codecs), you might see some frames being dropped when you play back some of these videos. This new version of Perian apparently fixes this issue.
Again, unless you have previously hacked your AppleTV and installed the previous version of Perian, you don't need to worry about Frame dropping!

Oops. I meant to say that this new version of Perian will now do some frame dropping of videos. I suspect that frame dropping is needed because the AppleTV CPU is so underpowered. Some of the codecs that Perian supports need some real horsepower before they can be decoded.
I suspect that without frame dropping, your underpowered AppleTV may freeze up.
So if you have hacked your AppleTV and installed Perian, it looks like this new version of Perian is a good upgrade!

I'm just glad that they fixed the MP4 video issue that was preventing me from watching any HD anime.
