Happy 7th Birthday, iPod!
It's hard to believe that 7 years have passed since Steve took the stage and introduced our friend, the iPod. Over the past few years, the iPod has gone from new guy on the block to "funnest" guy on the block. While the basic design hasn't changed much (for the Classic model at least), the features definitely have. When the iPod launched in 2001, it was basically a FireWire-capable hard drive and MP3 player -- nothing more, nothing less.
The first iPod sold for $399 for a 5GB version (which was Mac-only). Apple later came out with a 10GB version of the same iPod for $499. Here's some fun facts about the first iPod via Mactracker:
- Codename: Dulcimer
- Dimensions: 4.02" H x 2.43" W x 0.78" D
- Weight: 0.41 lbs.
- iPod OS: version 1.0, upgradeable to 1.5
- Introduced: October 2001
- Terminated: April 2003
- Hard Drive: 4200 RPM in capacities of 5/10/20 GB

I've had three, two broke, one was apple's fault, one mine.

For me, that would be 7: 1st gen 5GB, 2nd gen 10GB, 4th gen 20GB, 1st gen nano 4GB, 2nd gen nano 8GB, 1st gen iPod touch 16GB, and now 2nd gen iPod touch 32GB. There are also a few other models that I've bought for family members, including a 2nd gen mini 4GB, a 1st gen shuffle 512K and a 2nd gen shuffle 1GB.

Here is the thread on macrumors when the first ipod was announced: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=500
A majority of the users think it's way too expensive, a bad decision by apple, and a bad product. How wrong they were...
I LOVED the solid-state controls of the original Dock Connector iPod. (Had one, gave it to my mom when I got a video.) I also liked the headphone jack being in the middle and the lock on the right. And I HATE the newest UI, where half of the screen is pictures, arrows don't appear until AFTER you've selected an item, etc. I'll be holding onto my 60GB original video iPod as long as I can.

And those are the ones I still own. What can i say i am an iPod junkie.
Since 2001, I have owned iPod (10GB, touch wheel), iPod mini (4GB), iPod shuffle (512MB), iPod nano (1st gen and 2nd gen), iPod (5th gen, black), iPod (5.5th gen, white), iPod touch (1st gen, 8GB).
Right now, I have the iPod (10GB, touch wheel) and iPod nano (4GB, 2nd gen, Red); they all still in good condition.
Out of all the iPods I owned, the iPod mini was the I hated the most.
My iPod 5G has been good to me for 2 1/2 years. But a few days ago, my hard drive has been experiencing the click of death (sniff). As soon as I get a job, I'll find a hard drive on the net and upgrade it.
I'm glad for those who have had their iPods (like @Ged, post #7) for a while with no problems.
Your Survey doesn't have an option for Zero. Just a tad biased against those of us who prefer silence to think for ourselves, rather than following the brain-dead herd in having to fill every second of our lives with commercially manufactured sounds to provide a desperate veneer of meaning in our spiritually-empty and personality-free existences. :-)

Mine is a 10 GB 1st gen that's still going strong.
