Audacity 1.3.6 Beta for Mac released

Audacity LogoOur buddies over at sister blog Download Squad gave us a heads-up this morning about a new release of Audacity, the open source, cross-platform audio recording / editing application.

Audacity 1.3.6 (Beta) for Mac has new features added by students during the Google Summer of Code 2008:
  • Support of WMA, M4A, and AC3 file formats
  • Import of audio from video files
  • On-demand loading of uncompressed files, eliminating the wait before files can be edited
  • Linked audio and label tracks, so labels move with their corresponding audio when cutting, pasting, or changing speed or tempo
  • A hierarchical plug-in grouping for built-in plugins
Experimental features include:
  • Sound activated recording
  • MIDI file import, edit, and export
As always, Audacity is free. Click here to head over to the download page, and remember that this is betaware.

ok so here is my problem...for some strange reason i can not get the new version of Audacity because sourgeforce.net...or whatever it is called just comes up with a page for me that is nothing but dead links...every time i click something it comes back to the same screen...i cant take it any more...im going crazy...most of the time if this happens to me i can go to find the software i want from a different source...but every source i find for 1.3.6 takes me to that awful page...i am so frustrated with it...its not like i have to have this program but its nice to have different programs to work with...i have Sound Studio and i adore it...but anyway...i was able to find Audacity 1.3.5 and thought i would just find the software update button and click it...but there isnt one...so im at a loss...anyone know what i can do...im telling you the sourgeforce page will not even allow me to make an account...

using macbook 2ghz
OS X 10.5.5
and Safari 3.1.2

thank you

Audacity rocks! The UI may suck but it's rock-solid as an audio recorder and editor. As long as you are not trying to do ProTool-style stuff in real-time, everything works fine. Many professional podcasts are recorded with it.

BTW, the UI uses WxWidgets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WxWidgets), which is not exactly pretty but does the job. The resources are saved as standard image files, so technically, there's nothing preventing a designer from contributing his own.

Also, WxWidget has no built-in hooks for doing drag and drop like Cocoa, so adding this type of feature takes a bit more time since it's different for each OS.

Awesome, yes, rock-solid? hardly. I've lost many an awesome DJ set because of the poor temporary file handling.

The disappointing thing is all they have to do is add a couple of UI tweaks and store temp files in a single file, or sequential files and they're gold.

I have lost so much work using this inferior application due to its constant crashes and poor way of managing files. Avoid it at all costs.

Audacity is an awesome app, especially for free, but there are some little quirks with the Mac version that would be nice to have fixed. For example only recently did they release a version that allowed one to drag and drop sound files like every other Mac app there is. Also it would be nice if it supported side scrolling because tracks can get pretty long.

Other than that I've used several versions on several platforms to record and edit literally thousands of songs off of Internet Radio. Though with the Mac version there is no way to tell it to record directly off the sound card. Have to use Audio Hijack Pro (which is excellent for that purpose) but then to bust out the songs, Audacity is great!

walker, check out soundflower (http://www.cycling74.com/products/soundflower). It lets you route your system's audio and functions as an input/output source. With this you can set your system's output to soundflower (instead of built-in audio) and then choose soundflower as your input in audacity. Works flawlessly.

It's an OPEN SOURCE project. This means that nobody is getting paid to develop it and any money spent on it comes directly out of the developer's pockets.

If you don't like how it looks, then offer to do something about it or make a donation towards hiring someone who can. Otherwise, quit your complaining. You're getting it for FREE. Man, there's no pleasing some people.

Keep up the great work guys...Audacity is a fantastic app!

How can ANY software, that is good, look so disgusting? They should really spend some money, and overhaul their complete design, like graphic converter for mac did it, and others did it.

Even open office looks better like this....i'd like to use the app so much, because my powerbook is too slow to record 1 audio-line-in in garageband .. but audacity just is a pain to use because of its interface.

Audacity is cool, but I wish somebody would do something about that fugly interface. It still looks like it was designed in 1996 and never updated. Wish I knew more about that kinda junk, being a designer myself.....

i swear by Audacity. MIDI will be nice for those of us who have 3+ year old phones that can't play mp3s...
