Microsoft Mac BU gets a new GM
The Macintosh Business Unit of Microsoft, that company we love to hate, has announced that a new General Manager has taken over the group. Craig Eisler, the former Mac BU big cheese, has moved onwards and upwards into the bowels of the Redmond-based software giant in a position with the Entertainment & Devices division. His new replacement is Eric Wilfrid, a 14-year veteran of the company who has been with the Mac BU since it was organized in 1997. Wilfred started with Microsoft in 1994, working on the Mac version of PowerPoint. He was also involved in all five releases of Office for Mac, the Mac versions of Internet Explorer and MSN, and Virtual PC.
Wilfred announced the change in a post to the Mac BU blog today. I don't know about you, but I'm hoping that Wilfred takes the Macintosh development team in a new direction -- preferably away from Steve Ballmer's recent comments about Mac users not getting "the full version" of Office.
If you had one thing to tell Mr. Wilfred as he takes over the helm of the Mac BU, what would it be? Leave us a comment!

Make MS Office Pro an option for mac including MS Access.
Give option in excel preferences to change default dating system from 1904 to 1900 for all new spreadsheets instead of changing preference for each and every new xls. This is why dates sometimes appear 4 years and 1 day off when moved into another xls. Alternatively, I suppose they could auto-calculate the 1462 days when you paste but that might be asking too much.
It's telling that the comments on the MacBU blog are still turned off, isn't it?
Way to go for transparency, MacBU!! No better way to demonstrate a dialogue, is there?
By the way, all of you commenting with requests to the MacBU -- as if they read them, here. Funny, though.
Apple has iTunes for Windows so it can sell iPods, but hasn't extended iWork, or iLife (outside Mobile Me) and we're not whining. We all know that Microsoft would do better in the midterm if if castrated Mac Office and let all the serious Office development take place on the Windows side. If no IT department can make an argument that Macs are good in the corporate network because of interoperability problems and lack of comparable software, Windows and Office will continue to make money of Microsoft.
It would be shortsighted to make Mac Office great or even equal!
Could you make the apple version of office exactly the same as the windows version... my wife would cry she'd be so happy, to use the same thing at home and at the office.
or give us the option of either or...
plus give us a outlook not entourage, with plug-in ability so we coudl get some sync love on.
and it would be nice to have an exchange solution for home use sowe coudl get push contacts and calenders to our smart phones and smarter iphones
Please fix Entourage sync with iCal. I know it's supposed to work. But for thousands of us, it simply doesn't.

Expressed my concerns. To my surprise they have written back and tell me they are looking into it. Here is the website:

Do not fail in bringing VBA back to the Mac version of office as soon as possible. I know it is in the works, but not being able to exchange spreadsheets with macros with our PC-using business partners is not working. And since Applescript will never make it on the PC then that makes using Applescript worthless. We need scripting in Excel that is cross-platform.

Make it so I can find the handful elements I want out of thousands to get my Excel toolb.. ribbons (?) back to how I had them. Consistent, intuitive, and predictable are actually good adjectives to use. No, really.
November 02 2008 at 1:33 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell Documents to go for iPhone is on it's way, let's see how useful that is without Cut and Paste. I wonder if it will have any kind of compatibility with Word/Excel/PP for Mac. I am not getting my hopes up on this one.
As for a BM from Micro$, I think that Vista has caused the need for a full and thorough enema...
