Belkin's Switch-to-Mac USB Cable

Peripheral maker Belkin has taken note of the fact that a lot of people are switching to Macs. Their new Switch-to-Mac USB Cable, available in the US now for US$49.99, is designed to streamline the process of moving files from your PC running Windows XP or Vista to your Mac running Tiger or Leopard.

The cable comes with a Migration Assistant that performs a similar function to Apple's Migration Assistant -- it copies music, movies, photos, files, and Internet preferences from the PC to the Mac at USB 2.0 speeds. At the completion of the migration, the software provides a summary of all of the content that has been copied and the location of the files.

Belkin says the Switch-to-Mac USB Cable is on sale in the US now, and it will be available in Canada, Asia, Europe and Australia beginning in February, 2009.

Is there anyone out there who has actually used this product and can comment on it? As far as I can tell all the comments here are from people who write about this product without using or having it. For example, I would like to know what it does with outlook contacts, and if it really preserves all information [like outlook categories etc.].

I admit, my hasty post resulted in an ineffective remark / point.

Hopefully your superior skills of engaging in discussion will allow us to move on from this insignificant topic.

For those advocating the Apple Store migrations:

There are certain things that they simply won't do for you, like migrate and convert your email/calendar/contact databases in Outlook. Working at an AASP, I get a lot of angry customers who say "the Apple Store didn't move everything they were supposed to!" and ask us to do the conversion for them. Lord help us if they were using Outlook Express.

If this Belkin tool simplifies that process so anyone with $50 can move EVERYTHING over, all the better.

makes me wonder why Apple doesn't just make their Migration Assistant work with Windows too. The thought of transferring data from Windows to OSX probably deters a lot of potential switchers at the moment.

My guess is that it would take a monumental effort to write some code that would do this reliably. The beauty of OS X (as we all know) is that much of the stability is a result of a consistent operating environment. Over these many years (my dig a at Palin), I've seen many instances where Microsoft's own code wouldn't work properly on their own OS due to inconsistency with the environment from one PC to another. Take the dotnet framework for example. Most of the sync software I've seen recently has some level of dotnet implementation. Show of hands...who's seen dotnet sh*t the bed? I know I have. I used to be a PC. Now I'm a Mac.

Christian,

Joe the Plumber was used as reference for small business owners and related to tax policy. Joe 6-pack is used as a reference for the average person, similar to "average joe." Since Joe the Plumber is not similar to the average person, it cannot be used a reference for such.

A ham sandwich was correct in his usage of joe 6-pack as he was invoking a reference phrase for an average person and was not speaking about small business owners.

I can understand your confusion in the matter, as Joe the plumber was in the news due to the recently concluded election. However, Joe 6-pack was also used in the election and specifically the Vice-Presidential debate by Governor Palin. So, it was also relevant to the election and the reference made sense for those familiar with this debate.

So your correction was incorrect. And is understandable as you clearly missed some of the election. However, your addition of a link discussing Joe the Plumber does not show that you are correct, but merely suggests that were, one, fully convinced that Joe the Plumber is what should have been used in which case see above or two, seeking to be intentionally adversarial by posting a link to minimize the point made by a ham sandwich in response to your correction. Whichever the case both require you to learn how to engage in a discussion.

They should sell this $10 max. $5 is a good price. The problem with this is that you'll use it once (or maybe another 2-3 times) and that's about it, besides maybe lending it to your friends... so IMO, it's not worth the money. Pity that it's a good tool.

Oh, BTW, another way to transfer files from windows to mac is to strip out the windows hard drive and put it in an external case (which you probably already have), then copy it into your mac. then put back the HD into the original laptop. bam. problem solved.

Speaking of switching to mac I'm deciding on whether or not to get a macbook and I would like to get some advice if its really worth it. This would be my first mac which would almost end up being around $2000, so I was wondering is it really as good as a lot of people hype it up to be? Like I could get a HP Pavillion Elite Desktop with a nice monitor and a mini 1000 for right around the same price as the macbook.

1. End of the second paragraph:
"...summary of all of the content that has been copies and the location of the files." Should be 'copied' not copies ;).
2. I live in Canada, and i do not need this what so ever, but why is the United States not on the list?
