Hack your VW's budvase for the iPhone

Perhaps you've seen a Volkswagen Beetle driving around with a flower in its dashboard bud vase. People put all sorts of things in there, but we say ditch the gerbera daisies and go for something more useful.

Bug owner Nathan Barry has hacked his bud vase to accommodate his iPhone. By sawing away one slot for his USB car charger's cable and another to steady the iPhone, he made a clever stand that's easy to see from the driver's seat.

Good job, Nathan! My iPhone can be found bouncing around the passenger seat when I'm in my wife's car. The audio jack in my car is hidden inside the arm rest, which is even less convenient. Yes, I've tried FM transmitters but decided that they're manufactured by Satan himself.

So, how do you listen to your iPhone (or iPod) in your car?

I used a bell cell holder and mounted it to my dash to hold the iphone. Then used the iphone A/V cable from apple to run video to my sons portable DVD player to watch in the back. The Audio breaks off into the stereo and DVD payer so you he can use headphones and I can listen to the radio or CD or so we can all listen to it. Using the remote app on my computer I can stream all our movies to the iphone in the car so it allows him to have a lot of choice too or using cytv server on my mac and vlc4iphone we can watch live tv. It's not the best set up but it works.

Haha this is pretty creative! It amazes me what some of these developers come up with...check out a new, free app they called Ziibii, another innovative iPhone concept, which gives us users a way of staying in-touch and in-the-loop with friends, photos and basically the world. I found it for free via the iTunes App Store.

I've got a Proclip mount (got the size that adjusts to fit the iPhone with it's SwitchEasy Rebel case) on my centre console air vent, a Griffin car charger, and a cheap car stereo with an audio in socket. The spare charger cable is tidied up with twist-tie, and the spare audio cable is wrapped around the Proclip mount.

Never had any interference issues, the music mutes when I get a call on my Bluetooth headset, and it's just at the right position to be able to check/tap the screen while driving. Just waiting for TomTom to bring out a Satnav app, and the Google mobile update for voice dialling!

I use a headphone-jack-to-cassette-tape adapter in my cassette player, than i just stick my iPod touch in the cupholder. I know it's primitive, but its cheap, and it works.

I have a 2007 Honda CR-V and the aux input is on the center tray, as is the "cigarette lighter" charging plug. So I can charge my iPhone and have it plugged into the aux port while having it right by my side. The interesting thing is that when I get a call, the stereo mutes and if I answer while it's still plugged into the aux port, I hear my caller through my car stereo. Unfortunately, the mic doesn't work so they can't hear me.

I bought a new car some weeks ago. The BMW 3 series has a build in ipod control and bluetooth handsfree. So the perfect place for an iphone is in my middle console now and the sound is really good using the direct line in.
The only thing is, that my phone is not accessible, but nearly all features are usable over the car...

I use an iPhone/iPod interface from Grom Audio in my 2008 Prius. I connects directly to a plug on the back of the radio. The adapter box can fit behind the dash or in the glove box depending on your level of laziness. It charges my iPhone and appears as a cd changer to the vehicle audio system, which allows you to control playback from the steering wheel controls. It has had problems locking up, where the audio system will not recognize it. I've been able to resolve it by unplugging it from the audio system and iPhone, shutting the vehicle off and then reconnecting before the car is powered-up again. It happened 3 times in the 6 months I've had it. I contacted support about it and they sent me a new chip for it, but it happened again after the replacement chip was installed. I still need to find an elegant mounting solution, but they seem extremely over priced.

I just velcro it to the dashboard of my Focus. much cheaper than a $100.00 stand that mounts to the car.

They are a bit pricey, but worth it IMHO.

Mlaz - re your Ice Link - you sure that the Ice Link charged your iPhone? I thought that they were putting out 12V (FireWire) & the iPhone won't chage over FW. Your old iPod (I think that its safe to assume you had one) would have charged over FW.

I have an Ice Link originally purchased for a 3G iPod. It charges my original iPhone just fine. In fact it is the primary reason why I won't upgrade to an iPhone 3G--which dropped the firewire charging compatibility which this product presumably uses.
