Apple discontinues 23" Cinema Display
While some of us are waiting to purchase the new 24" LED Cinema Display, Apple has quietly pulled the old 23" Cinema Display from the online store. Apple is still selling the 20" and 30" Cinemas, but they have put the words "Ships: Discontinued" on the 23" model.I'm sure these are very sad words for the folks who don't like glossy screens; however, this could also mean local retailers (and Apple Stores) might have 23" models on sale very soon (did someone say black Friday sales?).
If you still want a 23" model, you can check Apple's online refurb store where they are currently being sold for $749 (US).
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

This is a fantastic monitor and it will surely be missed.
Now, if I could get the new monitor to work with my MBP I'd get rid of my 23" in a heartbeat!

Do the new displays require new new mini display port? If so it might be another reason for a new mnp. But I'll prob wait till snow lepord before that.

Seriously, this is old news.That said, this needs to be clarified: Apple didn't "pull" (or remove) the display from the store... it's simply discontinuing it. (Your title is correct.) The 23" is still available to purchase in both "new" and refurbished models.

This makes little sense. The new 24in is not a replacement for 23in. It is designed for notebook not for MacPro. I am sure that much more Cinema Displays were bought for MacPros than for notebooks. As a MacPro user who is looking to buy two more after iCore 7 update, I will be really mad if there will be no alternative other than the glossy notebook mind 24in. I have to shop somewhere else for monitors.

Ok ... so I just picked up a Mac Pro. I was really happy to hear about the LED Cinema Display.... then pissed to find out it wouldn't work with a DVI display adapter. I hope they come up with some option!

"If you still want a 23" model, you can check Apple's online refurb store where they are currently being sold for $749 (US)."
Or you could buy a matte-finish 24" LCD from Dell for hundreds less and GAIN multiple inputs--the E248WFP costs $399 and comes with DVI and VGA inputs, the 2408WFP costs $517 and has HDMI, DVI, VGA, component video, composite video, and S-video inputs. If Apple REALLY cared about being green, they'd let you use your display for more than just one thing. I've got a 24" in my room connected to a Mac, a PC, and my cable box, and a 20" in another room connected to a Mac Mini and another cable box.
Sure, you've got to navigate the world's crappiest online store to get them, but it's worth it. :-) Not a shill, just a happy customer.
This Apple-centric review site gave high marks to the Dell when comparing it to the Apple.

And once upon a time (maybe still?) Apple and Dell used the EXACT SAME LG PHILIPS PANEL!

@brian
Dell PVA panel versus Apple IPS panel.
Apple wins for photo and video editing.
Dell wins for gaming and day-to-day.

It's not accurate to compare the 23" ACD to random 24" LCD's
They have to use similar panel technologies. The ACD uses an S-IPS panel.
I do agree though, Apple monitors are extremely overpriced, and you can get much better LCD's for cheaper.
Unless you believe the snake-oil that Apple LCD's are "custom" calibrated in the factory.

Now that Apple is moving to monitors that show you what's behind you, guess which wins?
balls said 4:07PM on 11-17-2008
@Consumer
Compared to the Dell's perhaps.
There are a number of cheaper LCD's that use the exact S-IPS panels as the ACD, giving you nearly the same performance, for a much better price.
Though, the ACD's do look nice, but I'm not going to pay a $400 premium.

FYI, Apple Stores never put new-in-box merchandise on sale. So there won't be any in-store discounts on these discontinued monitors.
There are, occasionally, "fire sale" tables at some of the flagship stores, but those products are always "refreshed," which means "returned open-box." But this is, of course, very different from selling discontinued stock on discount.

Eizo sales are going to go up. You can't get a good black-point reading when calibrating the glossy monitors. And the Dells aren't as consistent.

I'm a motion graphics designer and I just bought a new MBP. I was dreading the glossy screen based on all the negative comments I see here. You know what? I loved it!
When the screen in powered on, it's so bright and vivid, it completely washes any reflection out.
