Mac OS X 10.5.6 update could be ready by Friday
Ars Technica's Chris Foresman notes that test builds of Leopard's newest update, version 10.5.6, are arriving more frequently, perhaps signaling that the software is nearly ready for the public.
Build 9G38, the latest, notes that there are no known issues with the build, a crucial last step in the development process. Prior builds addressed issues with MobileMe, Time Machine reliability over AFP, Mail, and a long list of other "focus areas." The build was released last week.
Foresman closed by saying "though the signs point to a release soon ... I do not recommend holding your breath." Always good advice.

A new update to the OS is always welcome, though it has been pretty bug-free for me for some time.

precisely - any news as to what this update will bring in visible changes to an end-user?

Visible changes? Isn't less buggy software good enough.

I am not saying this is not enough, but I was wondering whether there is something in it for people who are not waiting for any particular fixes

Does this mean iChat video chat will work again?

Oh god.. please let FINDER remember custom folder views!!
It's beyond pathetic that one year after Leopard's release, Finder still has amnesia troubles every now and then.

I doubt we'll get that one back. They deliberately changed how it works. If we're lucky, and enough people complain we might get it back in 10.6, but probably not before then. :(

I don't know where the Friday prediction came from... it doesn't seem any more likely than any other day. The fact that the last one came one week after the last beta patch is meaningless.

Will this fix the "Not being able to use an external display" issue?
I wasn't happy when I had to reinstall the OS to get 10.5.4 back so I could use my Apple-made display...

get out your wallet for what? Looking at the silly face you made on your license?
10.x.x updates have always been free, it's point releases (i.e., 10.6) that cost money.
And then, that's only if you don't have any friends with excess software funds.... even if those friends happen to be scattered across a tracker.
WalrusCP said 8:56PM on 11-17-2008
I assume you must be new to Mac, because point releases are always free.

Point releases are free? Since when? Last time I checked people upgrading from 10.4 to 10.5 needed to pay.

Don't you mean point point releases rather than point releases?

@Kitty and Mike. This article is about the 10.5.5 to 10.5.6 update. Not the 10.5 to 10.6 update.
I understand the numbers can be confusing ;-)

What I would LOVE in Finder is the ability to right click and perform actions (like rename) in Save, Save As..., etc boxes. Windows is a lot more flexible, giving those sort of shell commands to you anywhere you can see the file. That is about the only thing that annoys me about Mac OS X though :)
