Apple TV update 2.3 released
Apple has just released software update 2.3 for the Apple TV. Right now, we don't have the change log, but we'll update the post as soon as we get more information.
It is important to know that as with all other Apple TV firmware updates, running the update WILL remove any non-Apple TV software. So if you have installed the USB boxee hack you might want to wait on running the update.
Apple TV will eventually prompt you to run the automatic update, so boxee or XBMC users might want to check out the XBMC.org forums for information on disabling automatic updates.
If you are not using any additional software and would like to download this new update, you can do so by visiting Settings > General > Software Update from the main Apple TV menu. If you notice any new features, be sure to let us know in the comments.
Update: Apple has now posted a change log on their website. According to the knowledge base article, the following aspects of Apple TV have been updated:
- AirTunes Streaming from Apple TV - Music can be streamed via AirTunes to Airport Express speakers or other Apple TVs in your house.
- Third-party Remote Controls - Apple TV can now learn other remote controls and use them in addition to the Apple Remote.
- Playlists - Playlists in iTunes that contain Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, and Music Videos can now be seen on Apple TV.
- Music Volume Control - Support for volume control in Music.
Thanks for the tip, Jeff.

I think we're looking for XBMC.org, not XMBC.org.

Yeah, that was my bad. I edited Cory's entry and typed too fast. Cory changed it -- thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, I've got Boxee on my AppleTV, and that's a whole lot better than AirTunes, playlists and remotes so I think I'll just pass on this upgrade thank you very much.

I have Boxee installed too, but it is missing all of the good stuff (Hulu, Comedy Central, CBS & more). It sounds like others have had the same issues and the fixes seem complicated. Hopefully the next version of Boxee will include all of the goods. I may run the Apple upgrade and wait for the next Atv Boxee.
Any suggestions?

If CBS, Comedy Central, Hulu, etc, are missing from Boxee, you are probalby running an old version. Under "Update", you should FIRST update the XBMC/Boxee Launcher. That has to be a "0.3" or greater (0.5 is the latest version). Once that's updated, you will be able to update Boxee itself to the latest version. Without updating the launcher first, you get stuck at version 3300 (the "00" is wrong, but it starts with 33). Hulu appeared in the 3900 builds, and they're at something like 4100 or so now.

Nothing useful there. Meanwhile, Boxee makes my AppleTV what it should be, a full-on media viewer. I'll wait at least for an update to Boxee, which thankfully is a cinch to install. But perhaps apple would consider supporting its functionality some day.

There is also a new "Standby" option on the settings menu, which basically puts it to sleep

standby was in 2.2.

Except that it doesn't really put it to sleep. At least, not anymore than holding Play/Pause for 3s would. The display is made black (but still outputs signal) and the hard drive doesn't spin down.

I just updated my Apple TV to 2.2 and hacked it with ATVFiles, CouchSurfer and Transmission. I'm glad I can finally use the Remote app on my iPhone, and the 2.3 improvements offer nothing that I'm interested in so I'm going to stick with what I have.

WHY THE F#$%@ APPLE TV REMOTE CAN'T CONTROL MOVIE VOLUME !!!!
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SINCE ATV DAY 2 !!!!
I think by next update, if there is no system media wide volume control i'm going smash this bastard child of Apple product once and for all. Like many of you, I have been waiting for ATV to freaking graduate out of the hobby stage. COME'ON !!! APPLE WTF are you waiting for ?!!!!

If the AppleTV is passing though the AC3 to your stereo then there is not much it can do to control the volume. Get a real remote control and stop whining.

How have you ever managed watching dvd's? To my knowledge, not many have volume control either.
Jonathan Wise said 7:41AM on 11-20-2008
Buy yourself a Logitech Harmony Remote and control all your devices from one remote. And stop whining.
Aron T said 9:18AM on 11-20-2008
Probably because you are using optical out which passes bits instead of an analog signal. These bits are then decoded by your receiver into an analog signal. If you want volume control from the Apple remote you will have to send an analog signal rather than a digital one. Alternatively you could continue to use your receiver which is in all likelihood a much better audio processor than the Apple TV.

Hardly seems that important to me. Certainly not important enough to get so angry about. Get a grip.

I'm actually surprised that Apple opened up the doors to non-Apple remotes. Seriously, Apple has always been keen on keeping their products tie with their other products. Apple TV with Apple Remote & iPhone/iPod touch, etc... I guess they realized having the Apple Remote was too much. People like having one remote controlling all their devices. Good job Apple. You keep trying to make peoples lives simpler and you did it again.
On another note, will this be a week filled with updates? We've seen QuickTime, Safari and now the Apple TV. Will we get 10.5.6 and the iPhone/iPod touch 2.2? Hopefully!
