Apple TV update 2.3 released

Apple has just released software update 2.3 for the Apple TV. Right now, we don't have the change log, but we'll update the post as soon as we get more information.

It is important to know that as with all other Apple TV firmware updates, running the update WILL remove any non-Apple TV software. So if you have installed the USB boxee hack you might want to wait on running the update.

Apple TV will eventually prompt you to run the automatic update, so boxee or XBMC users might want to check out the XBMC.org forums for information on disabling automatic updates.

If you are not using any additional software and would like to download this new update, you can do so by visiting Settings > General > Software Update from the main Apple TV menu. If you notice any new features, be sure to let us know in the comments.

Update: Apple has now posted a change log on their website. According to the knowledge base article, the following aspects of Apple TV have been updated:

  • AirTunes Streaming from Apple TV - Music can be streamed via AirTunes to Airport Express speakers or other Apple TVs in your house.
  • Third-party Remote Controls - Apple TV can now learn other remote controls and use them in addition to the Apple Remote.
  • Playlists - Playlists in iTunes that contain Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, and Music Videos can now be seen on Apple TV.
  • Music Volume Control - Support for volume control in Music.

Thanks for the tip, Jeff.

Does this mean we can at last do a Music Video playlist or a movie playlist? i want to use AppleTV at a Point of Sale for promo videos so this would be great if this is now activated. Playing one video at a time before was a pain...

I do not have a volume control on my Yamaha DVD player; volume must be adjusted by my receiver.

I do not have a volume control on my Panasonic DVD burner; volume must be adjusted by my receiver.

I do not have a volume control on my Samsung Blu-ray player; volume must be adjusted by my receiver.

Please someone with AppleTV tell me where to find the Video-Podcast-Playlist...
I'm trying to find it on my mom's ATV, but she still couldn't find where it is.
Anybody using this feature? Where did apple hide it?

I love the volume feature!! Finally!! Although, I agree, it's a bummer that it doesn't work for video, and it resets every time you go from video back to audio. Maybe the next update....??

BTW, I'm trying to set up my third party remote, and I am having an issue when I am making the Apple TV learn the second key; I get the error message "apple tv has already learned this button".

Anyone else having this issue?

With each software update I keep hoping that the performance will increase. I am linking to a 150GB music library on my PC, and I sometimes need to wait up to 5 minutes for my ATV to respond. I'll get the update tonight, and hope for the best.

Anyone else have performance issues? Anyone have any tips?

Does anyone know if this update uses a custom build of Leopard instead of Tiger?

Apple TV's use of Tiger just seems so out of date, considering Snow Leopard's going to be here in a few months.

Seems out of date why? Because your Apple TV needs Time Machine or Spaces?

I can never get my Boxee to run right. Is it ok to update (I know it would remove Boxee) but will it lock up my Apple TV cause I have Boxee on it?

Sorry a bit of a newbie and trying to find out before I lock myself up.

Can we stream only music or movie too through airtunes?
I am looking for a way to make a wireless setup to listen movies in the bed with earphones.
I can plug an airport express near the ebd and plug earphones in it that way.

I think it would be cheaper and better to just buy some wireless headphones.
