Apple also releases iPhone OS for iPod touch 2.2
Apple also released a firmware update for iPod touch, bringing it in line with most version 2.2 updates for iPhone released a little while ago. It doesn't appear, however, that iPod touch users get the enhancements to the Maps app that iPhone users do. (Thanks, Guillermo!)
The update contains enhancements to Mail, fixes connection issues with WPA-secured wireless networks, improves Safari stability, and includes a new preference to turn off auto-correction for typing.
Also, podcasts are now available for download from within the iTunes app, and pressing the Home button from any home screen will now take you to the first home screen.
Several security enhancements are included, too, updating CoreGraphics, ImageIO, networking, Office Viewer, Passcode Lock, Safari and Webkit. A complete list of security updates is available on Apple's website.
The update is available by clicking "Check for Update" with your iPod selected in the Devices area of the sidebar in iTunes.

Not quite: this update doesn’t include any of the “enhancements to Maps” that the iPhone update includes.
Hopefully it just means that they couldn’t finish them in time for the release. Remember that when the iPod touch was first launched you couldn’t add calendar events until a few updates later.

I was wondering about that ... I couldn't tell if I was just too tired to get Google Street View to work, or if Apple didn't include it in the update. Looks like the latter is true.
I've updated the story. Thanks for your comment!

I think the reason they didn't add them is due to the non-GAAP accounting. in other words, by making this just a much needed bug fix update, and not a feature rich update Apple isn't charging the end user this time around for the update. in ~ about 45 days their will be another update with more features where Apple will probably bundle both of these together at a fee.

Google Street View is available when you search for an address. Click on the pin and then click the icon on the left side of the name bubble. Its an orange circle with a generic person symbol in it. This takes you to street view and you can navigate from there.

GAAP doesn't make sense here (and it never has really).
They added podcast downloads to an app already on the device, but neglected to add streetview to the maps app already on the device.
Both are new features to existing apps, one was left out. I think perhaps they just needed more time for some reason, that or they are intentionally differentiating the ipod touch from the iphone.

I gotta say... Even though I own an iPhone now--I upgraded from a 1G touch--I still find it a low blow for Apple to not keep touch users on an even keel. I'm pretty sure by now that these unequal update have less to do with Sarbanes-Oxley and more to do with pure marketing. I feel like lately that Apple has been abandoning their old credo of supply the best possible products and are becoming more of generic corporation more concerned with the bottom line and churning out profits. I'm not saying their products aren't awesome, just not the standards I would expect from Apple.
P.S. - I'm on my third iPhone 3G and it has a mushy home button, several stuck pixels, and an uneven screen. I'm also writing this on an aluminum PowerBook that only recognizes one RAM slot (common issue) and is on its second hard drive.

Couldn't agree more with John. Apple's success has led to arrogance. One of the main reasons I was willing to pay the extra for Apple products was because of their reputation for durability, but I've had lots of problems with the hardware I've bought, while people around me are still running Apple machines they bought 5-8 years ago.
I think the company seems to be leaning more on the fact that it's fashionable than on solid products, but they should remember fashions come and go.

I really disagree. I mean, every company has products that break. I have had numerous problems with my macs. But since I use my devices so much more than the regular user, it makes sense. And its no different in my opinion than its ever been. In fact, Apple just released their most durable laptop ever. Sure they are successful and bigger, but they still have the same reputation for quality. If you look at the numbers, the quality is still high. Sorry you seem to have had such bad luck.

New features :
Safari - New URL/search bar combo that expand each field to full width when tapped
App Store - Apps now show multiple screenshots for an app if available. Tapping one will display a full screen gallery of screenshots.
Issues :
Podcasts - I can now download episodes over wifi, but the app store can't tell what I've already subscribed to and downloaded. It shows existing episodes as downloadable.
App Store - The updates section of the App Store won't pick up any of the updates for the apps, but I'm assuming it's because the Apple servers are getting caned by the 2.2 updates going on!!

I've just download and updated my touch. Why can't I get the podcasts I download on the touch to sync back to the iTunes on my computer?
Also, there's no way to cancel podcast downloads that are running or paused.

there's a spelling mistake in the Podcast section of the iTunes store... 'catagories', should be 'categories'!
apart from that, im liking the upgrade so far

I hope this fixes Safari's tendency to crash on certain sites, such as wsj.com.

Note that this update also does NOT include the promised emoticon (emoji) support for the mail client. Way to go again, Apple.

The internet promised you this - Apple didn't. Learn the difference.

Come on, if you can't trust the internets, then who is left to believe in? Talk about some bad anger management on my side, though. I also missed somehow the press conference (by Softbank, not Apple) in which they stated emoji will be exclusive for Softbank mail accounts on Japanese iPhones... so Western iPhones miss that functionality too---
Not really a deal breaker, but it would have made for a very nice addition.

Really annoyed to read these Firmware update posts. Apple is just wasting months in adding Google StreetView and giving Safari a new look.
No Copy/Paste and no SMS Forwarding on the iPhone. Its seriously a waste......
Hope Apple leans about their mistakes in the decades to come.....
