First Look: Guitar Rock Tour for iPhone

Do you like to rock out with Guitar Hero or Rock Band? If you do, then you'll no doubt like Guitar Rock Tour [iTunes link] for the iPhone. The Guitar Rock Tour experience is similar to that of Guitar Hero, but portable. Unlike Tap Tap Revenge, Guitar Rock Tour gives you 17 licensed songs, including Rock You Like a Hurricane, Beat It, Smoke on the Water, and more.

The nice thing about this game is that you can play either the lead guitar or the drums. There are three difficulty levels for Guitar Rock Tour: Easy, Medium, and Hard. In addition, there is a quick play mode and tour mode. In quick play, you can play any song that you want, using any difficultly level -- assuming you've unlocked the songs.

In tour mode, you go around to different cities playing songs, earning points, and unlocking more songs. When you start the tour mode, you actually sign a contract for the band -- I thought this part was cool. The game play is identical to that of Guitar Hero or RockBand. You simply tap the notes that appear on the screen to make the music play. If you miss a note, then you lose points; if you get a note right, you gain points.

Overall, Guitar Rock Tour is a lot of fun and has great graphics -- I was surprised at how good and fluid the animations were. I experienced a lot of crashes, though this seemed to have been fixed with a reboot of the iPhone. I also found that sometimes the notes were not timed exactly right. This can be distracting, especially when you just want to play the song. If you are interested in Guitar Rock Tour, it is available from the App Store for $7.99 (US).

This game is great. I use it on my iPod Touch (last week it was only on iPhone)and I have never had it crash.

I did a reboot of the iPod once I downloaded it. Maybe thats why mine has never crashed.

The gameplay is spot on, I play Guitar Hero and this feels just like part of the series.

This game blows away TapTap. Its more fun, more challenging, the music is great, the tour mode is fun, and the animations and background are fantastic.

I have not even touched TapTap since I got this 5 or so days ago. Simply put, if you enjoy Rock Band or Guitar Hero you will love this. It makes TapTap look like the Wii Music of the iPhone.

TapTap Revenge now offers free downloads of licensed songs (Weezer, NIN, Katy Perry).

The problem that I have with TapTap is its lack of audio feedback while tapping a note. I have a hard time telling when I'm playing good or not. Since the music doesn't alter when you screw up--as it does is in GTR--the game doesn't engage me as much as it could. PHASE, a similar game for the iPod, suffered the same problem.

Considering A/V synchronization is vital to Rock Band/Guitar Hero gameplay, yeah, that would be a fly in the buttermilk, wouldn't it?

$7.99 for a game that crashes "a lot" and possesses A/V sync issues? Sure, why not?

I've found things to bit only ever so slightly off, but normally, just "playing" along to the beat works fine. I don't find it any more or less off than TTR.

There are however, some skill limitations that might cause perceived sync issues.

Several 3d apps that I've used crash until rebooted after install. That said, this app hasn't crash on me yet, or even hiccuped.

I just wouldn't read too much into the A/V sync and crashing issues. They are non-existent for me. But, I still paid $7.99. Totally worth it.

Can you compare this a bit more to Tap Tap Revenge? I like the fact that TTR is free and has started to integrate some popular music like NIN. Is this worth the $8 if TTR is already free? Thanks.
