Apple finally offers in-ear headphones for sale

We were recently wondering what happened to the in-ear headphones that Apple promised way back in September. Today, we're happy to see that the online Apple Store is finally offering them for sale with free shipping and delivery listed as 7-10 days.

These headphones promise to be of higher quality than the standard buds that ship with the iPhone. In addition to better drivers and sound isolation they include the new combo mic / remote that offers volume control on certain late model iPods (basically, the presently shipping models only). If you manage to grab a pair let us know what you think.

Everything works but the volume control.

Anyone know if these could be plugged into an iMac's (or other computer's) headphone jack, and work? I sit at a desk all day in a noisy environment, and would like to be able to plug directly into my computer to listen to iTunes playlists.

They should work for sound no problem, but the controls won't do anything.

Who would ever put something that Apple designed in their ears?

*SIgh* Cause' you now, nobody with a IPhone might EVER want to change volume without having to take the dam thing out of their pocket :p.

"...Best iPod ever..." unless you want to control the volume while one a bike.

Just a few quick notes:

1. Using in-ear headphones with the iPhone can be odd for some people because you typically cannot hear your own voice because of the sound isolation. It's a sensation that some may not like. I have a brand of ear-bud/mic for my iphone and I don't really like not hearing myself.

2. According to the specs, the new headphones have great wide frequency response: 5Hz to 21kHz. You can "hear musical details you never knew existed", except you won't with the current line of iPhones and iPods, since they all share the rather low-fi 20Hz to 20,000Hz frequency response (first number lower, second higher is best). Image putting an SD TV on an HD cable box. Sound will improve a bit with the dual speakers in each bud, but on paper the sonic specs of the pricy buds are much wider/better than the actual ipod/iphone units.

I still would like to try them out...I am sure the Apple stores will have them in a few weeks out on display.

What's all this "finally" business? These are just an upgrade to the same Apple In-Ear headphones I've had for the last 5 years. Or should I say, HAD *sniff*.

A tragic loss. I really liked those headphones. Idk bout $80 though... That's not what I paid for mine, though they were less high tech. Either way, I'd sooner get the Shure or Bose equivalents for the same price or less.

Did Apple not sell these same in-ear headphones a few years back? I've had a set since '05 or so.

I've never used them much. They're uncomfortable, and you can often hear the cord banging against your chest over the music. Those rubber membranes that form to your ears conduct sound from the cord like you wouldn't believe.

My everyday headphones are an in-ear set from Bose. Great clarity and bass, they've survived going through the laundry, and they don't suffer the "cord noise" problem.

Wow, seems like everyone here hates the standard earbuds.

Don't get me wrong, they're not great by any means - but they're better than any other free buds I've heard.

I'm not an audiophile by any means, but I am a musician, and I can tell the difference between a crappy pair of earbuds and a good pair.

Someone should open these up and take pix: doubt the pieced parts cost more than $15-20. Since you pick up a lot of sound quality just by sealing the ear canal, should they cost more -- Apple jacks up the price because it can...

I think my ears are too small or inner ear phones because none of them ever fit without pain.. and usually saliva to help them go in.
