How to justify the 'Apple Tax' in a recession

If you've looked out your window and noticed your neighbors living in refrigerator boxes on your sidewalk, you know the US economy is in the tank. More and more of our friends are getting pink slips, some of whom work at highly-regarded and once lucrative tech companies. These are the same people who, a year and a half ago, had no trouble shelling out $599US for a shiny telephone with no buttons.

So much has changed in our little world since then. Including, for the better, the cost of a shiny telephone without buttons.

But as the global economy continues to nosedive, and our personal economies struggle to remain intact, it's getting harder and harder to justify extravagant purchases. While a new $199US iPhone might not be over the top for most, a $1,799US MacBook Air requires more of a gut check.

Two things are certain. Death (of our laptop batteries) and taxes (the proverbial Apple taxes).

So how does one justify paying twice as much for a Mac when a decent -- albeit mostly unusable and impossible to look at -- Windows kit can be had for under $800US?

The answer is simple. When the pink slip comes and groceries become luxuries, I'll at least enjoy searching for a new job, selling my car on Craigslist and begging my wife to take me back from the comforts of my $2000US MacBook Pro.

If you're like me, and would rather eat trees than give up the Mac, here are practical, everyday tips you can use to justify your Mac habit during an economic downturn.

  • Save heating costs by firing up Final Cut and rendering some video. My MacBook Pro gets soooo hot when I do that, and I mean that literally (although, really, it does get excited too.) Bonus: place it on its side, against a wall, and pretend you're back in your old college dorm room. Just add hissing noises and you've got a very expensive radiator.
  • Did you receive a new replacement power adapter for your iPhone 3G a few months back? Sweet. Hope you saved the box. It's big enough for you and your kids to sleep in. Bonus: use the included 300 cubic yards of foam as a mattress. Better than a Tempur-Pedic.
  • Wish you could hit the pub for a few cold ones, but can't afford to pay the barkeep? Download one of the many beer mug simulators from the App Store and fake yourself drunk. Bonus: the only way to win the game is not to play. Just sayin'.
  • Tap the Stocks app on your iPhone. Quick, turn your iPhone upside down. Wow, things look better now huh? Bonus: Do this with the Stocks Dashboard widget by turning your monitor upside down. Extra bonus if you have a 30-inch Cinema Display.

These are just my ideas. I'm sure you have more. Let us know in the comments.

If you up-side-down the Stocks.app the graph doesn't change their direction (pointing down or up) for revert it you have to "reflect" the graphs ;)

Now I love my Macs and iPods and such, and believe me, I am an addict there are 3 of each....but calling a Windows laptop "Unusable" and "Impossible to look at" is just feeding the Mac Elitist stereotype a bit isn't it? I mean 90%+ of the world's computing is done on Windows, obviously it's quite usable and beauty is subjective. I'll prefer my Mac Pro to my HP Media Center and my Macbook Pro to my work issued Toshiba Tecra any day....but I wouldn't call the latters pieces of junk or too ugly to look at. Sheesh.

FANBOYS!!!!

Truth is Apple inst that great, your whole brushed aluminum look, old. The white plastic sterile look, old. The Black plastic "I"m uber hip look at me" look, old. Truth is maybe when they came out they might have been cool for a couple of months but now your designs are just plain boring (in my opinion they always were, but hey thats just me). You have 3 looks...thats it, good for you, way to take design to a whole new level
You like to talk about how Macs are so worth it, and are completely oblivious to the fact that it's apple that is boring and un usable, the sheer volume of PC designs renders apples claims of design innovation as quite obvious jealousy. As for the operating system, yeah vista is a colossal cluster FU@K, but XP beats any OSX version any day (Windows 7 is going to slaughter snow leopard), and compare anything you've done with a truly innovative system like Linux (any major distro) and you see just how pathetic Macs really are. I suggest you guys settle in for the long hall as a niche market, because you'll never amount to anything else. And when people who switched get over justifying their intelligence for buying macs and come to terms with their buyers remorse you might not even be that

"And when people who switched get over justifying their intelligence for buying macs and come to terms with their buyers remorse..."

Not gonna happen, Rob. Aside from the products, Apple has something else going for them that no one else has... Their stores.

Where can you get free tech support, and cheap repairs (free with Apple Care) for your PC? Do you know about any other company that gives access to a genius bar? or free workshops? or personal training... I was just in my local store and found out the employees don't even make a commission over there. The entire store is set up to make using a Mac and switching to a Mac better and easier.

Sure, Best Buy has their Geek Squad... but do you think anyone of those guys knows your specific PC as well as even the stupidest "genius" knows a macbook?

Subtract the value of the support from the apple retail stores from the cost of mac ownership! That makes the cost of a Mac way less than anything of comparable specs... especially for the 80% of the computer using population that has minimal tech savvy.

If you buy and use a Mac... you won't go back. I was a Windows Tech for years... but since buying my first Mac, I can't imagine going back. With Windows there has always been so much configuration and pain-staking setup... Macs just have a habit of working... and when they don't, you have a Genius Bar.

I thought this was really funny. For a person on the brink of going through this (I work in retail, enough said), I definitely find solace in the little things that get me through the day. But for the love of god, would you people stop taking this seriously? Its not poking fun at the millions of unemployed Americans out there. Its poking fun at the extent of which Apple fans are addicted to Apple products, that even in one of the most troubled financial times in our lifetime, people are still willing to pay top $ for a computer. So chill out!

Hiya, I doctored the poster image for Dan. I can't say I have a high-res version of it, but what I did I posted to Flickr.

I showed this post to a couple friends who recently were sacked. They were not amused.

do you mean laid off/pink slip? If they were sacked means that they were crap anyway, which I don't think was the case. It's like Katrina has swept across the country for some folk. Unfortunately life goes on and people will forget, also if your friends don't find work and lose their houde/flat will you still want to know them in 6 months time?

"Some ARM chips routinely use 10-20 times less power than Intel for similar operations. Battery usage with ARM chips in prospective netbooks could be measured in days, not hours – much like smartphones."

Here's to hoping that they will incorporate something like with they MBP graphics into their laptops.. Have one of these running when you only check emails and stuff and switch to a powerful Intel for games, photo and video editing etc..

why buy a new one? keep the old macbook and maybe step down one system version or two and there you are. Most modern setups, be it mac or pc, have more than adequate power to do simple office and internet use. Even desktop publishing or web design can be done with older software versions and one would only need new machines for 3D or video editing use. If there's no cash around, there's no justification for buying this year's line of Apple (or PC) machines.
