LittleSnapper 1.0 is released
Way back in September, our friends (including former TUAW blogger Nik Fletcher) at Realmac Software started trickling out details about their newest Mac app: LittleSnapper. Now after a thorough beta process and lots of hard work, the application is finally available! I have been using the application since its first alpha and I have to say, it is a strong contender for my favorite Mac utility of the year.
LittleSnapper was developed to solve the problem of organizing, sharing and notating screenshots -- especially screenshots from web pages. LittleSnapper does this, and more, effectively and beautifully.
I'll be posting a more in-depth review soon, but here are some of my favorite features:
- Take snaps from any browser, without installing a plugin. Regardless of the browser you use, you can take a snap by invoking the LittleSnapper keyboard shortcut or clicking on the LS menubar icon.
- Save and view the web archive of the site you snap. You can view full web archives within LittleSnapper and access the code (using your choice of editor). This is really useful for development work.
- Use DOM selectors to snap specific portions of a web page. Within LittleSnapper's built-in browser, you can use the DOM selector (think Web Selector for Safari) to capture a specific element. I love this feature.
- Edit images non-destructively within the program. You can add blur, highlight specific parts of the screen, add text and callout arrows within LittleSnapper and export the image with annotations on or off. The blur feature especially is sure to save me lots of unnecessary Photoshop time.
- Open a snap directly in Photoshop.
- Share snaps via the web using either QuickSnapper, Flickr or your own FTP or web server.
- Organize snaps into collections and set rules to automatically file snaps in place based on content or tags.
- Import your existing screenshots into your LittleSnapper library
Realmac's page has more detail and case studies (full disclosure: I'm one of the users they profiled). If you take a lot of screenshots, especially of web pages, I really encourage you to give the app a try. The unregistered version lets you take up to 30 snaps to try out all the features.
LittleSnapper 1.0 requires OS X 10.5 Leopard and is $39.99 US for a single license (5-user Studio licenses are available for $129 US). All LittleSnapper licenses include full access to the QuickSnapper service.

SCOTT:
I think all that Nik was trying to say was that blog comments are the best place to receive support for a product.
You call him rude but turn around and say "LittleSnapper is over rated and over priced" which isn't very polite in my book.
PRICE CROWD:
The competitors here are Snapz Pro X which costs $29 without the movie option and Skitch which is currently still in beta after over a year. Unfortunately, this is making everyone think that Skitch is free forever and honestly it doesn't seem like Plasq knows exactly what they want to do. They know they want to monetize it but they are also talking about keeping a limited free version available. We'll see eventually. If they do decide to go completely non-free I'm gonna be curious to see what everyone thinks about the price. I suspect anything over $0.00 will have some people saying it is too high.
However, none of these does some of the things that LittleSnapper does or addresses the concerns of people who screenshot a LOT. This is like iPhoto for screenshots; Library, Editing, Markup, and Posting. No other screenshot app maintains and organizes a library of screenshots for you. They don't have non-destructive editing capabilities that can be undone 10 days later. In the case of Snapz there is no markup capability or posting options with the application. Skitch helped raised the bar for screenshot apps, LittleSnapper raises the bar higher.
If you don't have a need for this or these features don't provide value to YOU then this app may not be for you. Some people would say that $50 for a console game would be a complete waste of money whereas hardcore gamers might find $100 of value in it.
Let's judge the app on its merits and value. If you just need to screenshot something once in a great while, OS X has this built in. If you want more and do this frequently then you look at apps like LittleSnapper.
Why not just use the free, cross platform Jing Project? It does screenshots, notations, video (e.g. captures whatever you're doing on the screen into a movie)? And has online hosting. And free..

Uhm guys, we're not talking about a screenshot application *only*, it's an app that can help you organize your tons of screenshots from browsing around using folders, collections, smart folders and tags.
It's amazingly useful for someone like me who always collects little design tidbits from around the web. I needed a place to gather them all. LittleSnapper is that place.
And of course, the DOM screen shot utility is fan-ta-stic.
So for a screenshot app AND a screenshot organizational app, I don't think the price is that steep. Plus, the interface is uber sexy.
I'm liking LS and indeed provides more features than Skitch (that I use in a daily base, even if I don't consider it perfect must specially since it doesn't organize the images). However, I do have to agree that 40$ is steep, specially for a just released app. I'll have to think and test it for awhile to see if it's worth it.
As a sidenote after reading some comments -- people have the right to say what they think. They think it's expensive and because of that they will not buy it? They can and should say so. They think otherwise? Same thing. I don't like bashing or fanboyism, but I like a well done critique, either positive or negative.
As for me -- like I said -- I haven't made my mind yet. I like it, I would use it extensively, but for 40$ it's not a no-brainer.
i'm having some very od issues with LittleSnapper :n(

Hi Artist-Illustrator,
If you're still experiencing issues with LittleSnapper, please would you take the time to inform us directly before posting a comment? The issue you're pointing to is one that 2 (out of around 5,500) testers reported and something that we cannot replicate here at HQ. The only commonality is Parallels 3 (not the most recent, I believe: we use VMware at Realmac HQ) from the limited reports we've had.
We're of course happy to look into it further, however comments on a blog are not an effective way for us to ensure that any bugs get filed, and fixed, for a future release of LittleSnapper.
Thanks!
Nik
OMG...HOW RUDE WAS THAT?
Nik where do you get off reprimanding someone here on TUAW...i dont care if you used to be a writer here or not...that is totally uncalled for...he has every right to post whatever he feels like posting short of profanity...
and for you to attack him that way is wrong...see this is my problem with developers...some "cant take the heat and should stay out of the kitchen"
YOU OWE "artist-illustrator" an apology...
you are the one that is getting FREE publicity for your product here...
and from where i am sitting you are getting the "DOG AND PONY SHOW" because you are close friends with TUAW and Christina Warren...but you dont get to make orders to people like that
my opinion...and i dare you to attack me...
LittleSnapper is over rated and over priced...sure there are some people that it will help greatly for what they do...but for the most part...the free alternatives are just great
i understand you have to pay the bills and NO ONE is saying you have to give your work away but the fact is...lower prices sells more products...sure there will be alot of people that will pay $40 for a screen grab program...but with the economy being as bad as it is at the moment...that number is much less than what you would have expected 6 months ago...
i think you need to step back and take a deep breath...its understandable that you would be defensive of your baby...but you being unprofessional will cost you more than customers...it will make you lose the respect of your peers, which im sure is much more precious to you than the money
ok...now that i have taken a few deep breaths...smoked a cigarette...i am more calm
now your prob deserves to be praised and i know you have been doing alot of work on it...so i will offer my congrats on getting it to where you felt it was ready for release and i wish you luck...but watch ur tongue mister...
as for the free alternative...i use them all...Skitch daily...love all the ways to play with it...and make my screen shot informative especially for sending to developers...Paparazzi fills that webpage niche...and Jing is just plain fun to use and has so many uses...and they all cost nothing...which with the financial state of this country works just fine for me
Hi Guys
Thanks for all your thoughts on LittleSnapper, it's been really interesting to read (both on TUAW and elsewhere) your feedback on the product. We're always looking to make LittleSnapper better, so I wouldn't be surprised if suggestions made make it into a future update.
With regards to pricing...
We spent a fair while looking at pricing for LittleSnapper. Yes, we're a company - and that means there's bills to pay. Unfortunately, 'good karma' as a result of releasing a free product doesn't pay those bills. We also think that, for the target market of designers looking to build up a pattern (or design) library, or for managing a library of screenshots LittleSnapper is actually very good value.
It's genuinely interesting to hear what folks think about product pricing - what with the debate on App Store pricing still on-going - so thanks for taking the time to give us some honest feedback. Whilst I can't say we'll act on all of it, it's certainly noted.
Cheers,
Nik
I can't believe it can't scale screen shots. That's a deal breaker.
The automatic hosting is nice for sharing online, and the DOM selection interesting. The annotation tools are good, too. But it needs scaling.
I'm still waiting for a Mac tool with the power and flexibility of SnagIt on Windows.
I miss the automatic URL-copied-to-clipboard to the recently snapped and uploaded image as in Jing. There you in settings can add [imagename] to the end of the URL.
It takes me one second to screendump, upload and paste URL to my IM-contact I'm helping out or showing something.
The interface in LittleSnapper is spiffy though.
YIKES, $40!?!?!?
Thats a bit steep... dontcha think?
It depends on what you are doing. If you don't take many screenshots, then yes, it is probably a bit much. If you are like me and you can take 40 or 50 a day (sometimes far more), this is a Godsend.
December 11 2008 at 11:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPlayed with it but can't see me paying for this when all I need is what skitch already provides for free, if you want to charge this much for an App then it must be further up the scale than ALL the free alternatives. Great software but should be half the price.
