Found Footage: Pete's FishCam

Remember the remote-controlled dog treat dispenser from a few weeks ago? Now Pete Raumann has come up with Pete's FishCam, which comes complete with an iPhone interface so that he can remotely watch his fish swimming around in a nicely appointed aquarium.

It's more than just a webcam, though -- Pete can also turn the lights on and off (both tank and accent spotlights), pan the camera left and right, and open and close the "treasure chest" in the tank. Pete used the same equipment and web-based applet generator from ioBridge that was used to create the dog treat dispenser.

Note to Pete: your next assignments are to build an aquarium-cleaning robot and fish feeder that you can control from the iPhone. The video below shows how the interface works on the iPhone, complete with narration by Mr. Raumann.

What are your ideas for something you'd like to be able to watch and/or control from your iPhone? Put it in a comment, and please remember to keep it clean!

I'd like to be able to monitor/control my off-the-grid power and temperature systems!

Wow, I just finished stumbling through a project that aspired to be as streamlined as this, but wound up much more DIY-ish. I have a studio space in Switzerland, in a mostly-finished off 300 year old barn. I occupy a corner that is somewhat insulated, but hovers around 9ËšC when it's around freezing outside. Much too cold to work. I have a 1200W quartz heater that gets it up to 17 degrees C (about 65F) in 2 hours, but I needed a way to turn it on remotely so it would be up to temp when I got there. So I got myself an Arduino board, and scavenged a 12V relay from an old drive enclusure bridge. Then I wired these up to an X10 remote and tapped the pins for a wireless outlet, plugged the heater into it, and wrote a patch in Pduino to make it all work. Then I pointed my iSight at the heater so I could get feedback through EvoCam. I run the whole thing over ssh from my iPhone, which works great. But it's nowhere near as elegant as Pete's fishcam.

So, Mr Fish, where can we get the App? can you get it on Cydia?

Very cool, but you have to admit: some people have entirely too much time on their hands.

This is cool and all, but having this on the wide open net is quite the bad idea. I just checked out the site and its cool, but unless you want everyone being able to control the lights I would take those controls off of the public page.....

Lets hope this isnt in a bedroom or something where darkness cannot be annoying.
