Family.app gets updated to 2.3, fixes iSight/iPhoto features

If you have been following Saltatory Software's Family.app, then you know how great it can be for easily creating family trees. Recently updated, this application allows you to easily track your family's genealogy. The new update fixes some bugs that occurred with Leopard, like the iSight/iLife integration. Some of the updates to Family include:
  • You can now export your Family file to PDF, and it will still be crisp if you zoom in.
  • The iSight and iPhoto/iLife integration work again in 10.5.
  • You can now zoom in 120% when in the main editor.
  • Updated Family bubbles to make Family files look better in general, especially in printing.
  • Minor bug fixes regarding text input.
  • There is a fun little fade out when you close windows.
  • Made it so that dragging a new connection is easier than before. Dragging a connection is not as particular about where you click like it was in 2.0.2.
If you want more information about this update, or would like to download Family.app, you can visit the Saltatory Software website. Family is $29.95US for a personal-use license and it requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or higher.

It´s looks are fine but it is a terrible app. I tried this morning and after saving, quitting and re-starting the app I found all my family tree its duplicated without photos and it does not have a way of deleting the duplicates. Too bad, it looks fenomenal but it`s a failure from my point of view.

Wow, I've never heard of that. Would you mind sending the family project file you created to our support address? Also, in the email if you could write down anything you did while creating the file, and information about what version of OS X you have, that would probably help as well.

i have a question: how much did you pay tuaw to write this item?

I actually didn't pay tuaw, or Cory, anything to write this. I'm sure he gets paid to post articles to tuaw though, or if not he just has fun posting articles about mac software.

I believe he posts about a wide variety of subjects. However, I believe he's posted about Family before.

Hi Tony,

Great question, we get this one a lot. We're currently working on adding GEDCOM support into Family, and it's about 40% done. There are a lot of things left to do of course, but we didn't want to hold off on releasing these updates for GEDCOM. We're aiming to have GEDCOM completed as soon as possible, but it is going to require a lot of UI changes that will need to come before putting it into Family.

Maybe I don't know how to read family trees, but it looks like there are some quite incestuous relationships in that picture.

Look at the names. *Interesting* relationships were just one of the key points of Olympian genealogy.

The olympians were indeed very strange. However, when creating that sample family, we tried to keep to the mythology as much as possible. History is a small passion of mine, and as such that's why we chose that type of data to show off.

The neat things it shows off kind of help to explain what you can do with Family quite easily. Thanks for noticing!

Might be nice, but if you ask me the (free) webapp Geni.com provides all the needed functionality with a very nice GUI for operations like creating and navigating trees, tagging faces in photos etc. It doesn't make sense to have such an app on your own desktop when you want to invite your (extended) family to add their own stuff.

Why is there a graphic of a plane on their website? What am I missing?

That's actually a relic of an old design that we have kept around for a bit. However, I think it needs to be removed, as there isn't much point to it. :)

I'll get on that.

Checked out MacFamily Tree a month or so ago. More expensive than the app here, but also appears far more robust and it includes 3D rendering of the family tree (which is darn cool).

I've never heard of this App, and even though the screenshot and features look pretty good, the fact that they are only fixing Leopard bugs in 2009 doesn't exactly instill me with confidence ... I think I'll pass.

Hi Ross,

Generally we had some last minute bugs to make leopard integration work creep up, we would fix them, then new ones would creep up. It didn't make sense to push that sort of thing onto our customers, we preferred fixing them and then releasing. Little did we know that it would have taken this long.

It looks like an interesting app. Does it also support multiple marriages and marriage in the family, e.g. between siblings etc.?

You can do marriages between siblings Joe. Also gay/lesbian marriages are just as easy to setup (we receive these two questions together typically).

We're working on figuring out the best UI for multiple marriages. At the moment we have about 3 ideas floating around, but nothing seems really solid. We've tried a few designs that really just looked bad, or were hard to use. If you have any ideas we'd be happy to hear them!
