iLife '09 hardware up-to-date program
Just as we saw them do in 2007, Apple has instituted an up-to-date program for iLife '09. According to Apple, customers who purchased a qualifying Mac "...on or after January 6, 2009, that does not include iLife '09, [may] upgrade to iLife '09 for $9.95US." What exactly is a "qualifying computer?" You'll find the full list here, but the short answer is you'll have to check your machine's model number. There's even a list of qualifying refurbished machines.
This offer will end on March 28, 2009, so you've still got time to upgrade for ten bucks.

I just got a new unibody MBP on the 7th and my serial number is not recognized. There is a problem with Apple's online site, and it is effecting a decent number of customers. Be prepared that your serial number may not be recognized and you may have to mail or fax the form in. Apple needs to fix this asap.

Anyone have any idea of a ship date for iLife? Can't wait to try the face recognition / tagging system

There appears to be some issues with setting this up online, and Apple support told me I'd have to mail in my request. I bought a Macbook on Sunday, and entered the machine's serial number, only to have the website tell me it was not recognized. After trying it a couple of times, I called Apple. They told me to hit enter a few more times. On the fifth or sixth try, the website instructed me to print & mail in the form. Evidently, it's a known issue with Apple, but there's no fix for it.
Not that this is an end-of-world problem. But just by way of FYI

This has been on the apple site since they announced iLife 09.... at the speed a news cycle turns around out nowadays is this really news?
Macrumors has a page 2 for for stuff like this, maybe TUAW could do the same?

Maybe "Qualifying Mac" means "no Psystar and no Hackintoshes."

So much for those of us who bought the unibody machines on the day they were announced.

Oh, I'm angry - Ordered MacBook Pro from MacMall on 12/31/2008 received on 1/7/2009. The up to date page wont even let me enter my information because it was in 2008. Called customer service they offered to sell it to me at a reduced price of $71.10 oh boy, what a deal. Arrgghh

Same thing happened to me with Leopard and their up to date program. I bought a mac mini and then they announce Leopard w/up to date program and I was outside the purchase date by two days, but didn't receive the mac mini until the program was active, however I did not qualify based on the purchase date. I went back and forth, sent in the form, they wouldn't budge on the date or honoring any discount.
I am still using Tiger.

Ask MacMall to do a "virtual exchange". In other words, have them return the item and reissue you a receipt. I've done it before with them, though the change in year might be an issue tax wise to them. But its worth a shot. That will get you a receipt dated in the proper time frame.

Awesome. The refurb Air I got last week qualifies. My shipping date just says "January."

"This offer will end on March 28, 2009"
Dose this mean that new iMac and MacMini models will be out around that time?

My parents just got my sister a new iMac for video editing this past Christmas, ordered in early December.
Oh, well - I'll just get the Family Pack of the new iLife (only $20 more) and give my sister one of the licenses and let her borrow the disc. And that means I still get a license for my MacBook Pro.

Very odd... my MBP model number is listed in that link - but I purchased it May 19th 2008. Does that mean, in spite of it being listed, I do not qualify? Or, am I reading incorrectly?
