Preliminary tethered jailbreak now available for iPod touch 2G
About two weeks ago, the iPhone Dev Team started dropping hints about redsn0w, which is the project focused on jailbreaking the iPod touch 2G. Yesterday, the first unsupported tethered jailbreak, dubbed "Red Snow Lite" was released to the public. Before you attempt to jailbreak your shiny iPod touch 2G, be aware of the caveats and potential device hazards. As the README quite explicitly states, this exploit is unsupported and requires tethering the device to your computer to jailbreak. What this means is that unless you are perfectly comfortable with using buggy development tools, installing some extra libraries and interacting in DFU mode, you really shouldn't be attempting to jailbreak your device.
It looks like you need to replace some special files in PwnageTool 2.5, create a custom ipsw for 2.2.1, extract and rename some core files and then connect to your device via DFU mode to patch and replace those files. That's a bit of an oversimplification, but the gist is: this is more complicated than just running one program.
I looked at doing this on my own 32 GB iPod touch, but I think I'll hold off. First, it isn't clear that the DFU issues the Dev Team is reporting for the iPhone jailbreak/unlock with OS X 10.5.6 don't affect redsn0w. Secondly, I'm not convinced that anything available via jailbreak is worth risking my $400 investment. Alternate iPhone themes look really cool, but a working iPod touch is even cooler. Thirdly, I really don't want to play guinea-pig to something that isn't ready for mainstream release.
I'm passing on the iPod touch 2G jailbreak for now. So iPod touch 2G owners, what say you? Are you going to take the plunge or are you going to watch from the Lido deck with me?

Hi guys
My son tried to install redsnow and he has no idea what he is doing. We have windows and not a mac. Now his ipod touch will not start and even if I press both reboot buttons it is just a black screen. I have no idea what this program is or how to fix it. Does anyone know if it can be saved.
Thanks
The iPod Touch won't boot normally even if he did it right; you have to put the iPod Touch into DFU mode and patch in the jailbroken firmware to turn it on every time.

Everyone knows there are a lot of applications available on the jailbroken devices that are not available on the app store, and for the hardcore techies that may be reason enough. However, I think the reason most people want to jailbreak their device is so that they can change the look and feel to something more pleasing to their eye. For me, it makes me proud to show off my slick new icons and cool UI tweaks.
I also believe, depending on the theme, this enhances Apple's default theme as well as app store icons. Developers are NOT designers, and it shows in all these terrible app icons. It's nice to be able to give your device one clear theme rather than all these random icons.
I do know that not everyone cares about this and just want the device to work, and thats fine, but now maybe you understand why some of us like to jailbreak. Not to get free apps, just to customize the look of our device.
Anyone disagree?
I totally agree. Once they get quickpwn, winpwn, etc. to work with the 2G, I'll risk my itouch. Right now, i'm a noob to the hardcore techie community. I'm currently working to get OS X on my toshiba.

I got a 16 GB iPod touch 2G for christmas and I definitely don't want to break it.
I really appreciate all the people who will be the initial guinea pigs. When I know it will work and jailbreaking is as easy as 1-2-3, then I'll consider jailbreaking my 2G.
here is an apple script that will run the boot commands for you, all you have to do is put it into dfu

Just because some people don't understand tinkering, doesn't mean that those of us that like it should be flamed. Just like some people sit in their garage for hours on end tuning their car to no end, there are those of us that like to do fun things with our technology. We are the kind of people that like to run Linux on anything we obtain, theme every piece of technology we own, and swoon over a new package manager release. This is an Apple blog, and when important news about Apple technology (whether official or not) comes around, someone is bound to write about it.

"Because you can" is the BEST answer, in my opinion, but the practical answer is that jailbroken apps have better hardware access than app store apps, and can do more/better stuff. Not having a Touch, my two primary examples that I use rely on the iphone camera hardware (snapture, cycorder video), but there is plenty of stuff (categories, backgrounder, sbsettings) that would be a big boon on the other platform.
