Reports of startup issues after 2009-001 Security Update
Over the weekend, the mailbag caught a few notes of problems starting up once Leopard users had applied the 2009-001 Security Update (thanks @danielbru), and on Friday the spotty issue was noted by MacFixIt as well. Affected users report a variety of symptoms: the dreaded 'boot disk not found,' a 20-minute hold before the login screen shows up, and a disabled keyboard & mouse -- making the usual first troubleshooting step (a Safe Boot, triggered by holding down the shift key at start up) rather more difficult. As with most Mac OS X patches, the majority of those who applied the security update did so with no reported problems, but that's cold comfort if you're one of the unlucky few. While it's always a good idea to verify your backups before updating to major dot releases, I doubt most users would bother with that due diligence when facing a 'simple' security update; unfortunately, since these updates often touch multiple subsystems, issues do emerge for some folks in the aftermath. MacFixit's thorough guide to troubleshooting startup problems is a good starting point if you're having problems, and if you've already been through the mill this weekend, let us know how you resolved your problems in the comments below.

After installing the security update 2009-001 on the PPC G5, MAC OS X v. 10.4.11. i've got a strange problem.
After a few minutes the desktop flips up in front without asking, it doesn't matter in wich applications your busy, it always comes up in front after a few minutes.
Is there someone with the same problem? Something, we can do?
Thx
I downloaded this update for my iBook G4 10.4.11 and after this update, most applications refused to open. I ended up having to do an erase and install, and i will not be installing this update again until this problem is fixed.

After installing the Security Update 2009-001, computer fails to start normally- requires restart each time.

I can start in safe mode. I've run the full lot of disk utility functions, to no avail.
I do not have the system disks, only OS X 10.0 disks. Grrr.
Any help would be much appreciated.
I seem to have fixed the issue. I installed OSX 10.5. After rebooting, it seemed to work for 20 minutes, but then gave a kernel panic message. Instead of going file by file, I simply deleted the entire Cache folder while logged into safe mode. Rebooted and all seems well *he says with fingers crossed*

I had a grey screen at start-up on my new 24"iMac and, after reading through all these comments I decided it might be the external HD I had attached via firewire. Pulled out the firewire cable and it started up as usual.
My Mac Mini hung on the startup screen for around 30 minutes after installing the update. Since it's never done that before, I figured something was wrong and did a hard reboot. After that, it started up normally.

February 17 2009 at 10:21 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI rebooted fine after the update, but my keyboard and mouse (and any other USB device) have been completely disabled. I'll plug in an Apple mouse as my only usb device and it gets no power at all. I started testing with a microsoft mouse so I can see the LED light, and when it gets plugged in, the light goes on for about a half a second and then turns off. I can hold C and boot off a leopard install disc and USB works fine, safe booting doesn't fix the problem. I can use my computer remotely with screen sharing, but Apple System Profiler says "No information found." for my USB bus.
