Apple Bluetooth keyboard paired with iPhone
There's a very cool video at Ralf Ackermann's blog showing an iPhone receiving input from an Apple Bluetooth keyboard. Of course, it requires a jailbroken phone, but Ralf claims that it works in all iPhone apps that make use of the keyboard.
This reminds me of the Stowaway Keyboard I used with my old Palm IIIe. I didn't mind Graffiti as much as some others did, but attaching that keyboard to my Palm increased its usefulness many times over.
Of course, I'd love to use a wireless keyboard with my iPhone. Since I won't be jailbreaking, here's hoping Apple (or someone else) will make this available to scaredy cats like me.

We got a keyboard working on an iPhone without jailbreaking.

@Sabo, there is no reason to be a scardy cat when jailbreaking ....
I don't get it. most people here probably have Macs. it's as easy as 1. sync/backup your phone in itunes 2. create ipsw in pwnagetool 3. pwnage tool holds both your hands, gives you a walker, puts a diaper on you and helps you move your legs in guiding you into DFU mode. No this isn't in any way mocking any users, this is just HOW EASY THE APP MAKES IT. 4) use itunes to restore from said ipsw file.
done. 10-15 minute process. something goes wrong? *gasp* your phone is 10-15 minutes away from being RIGHT WHERE YOU STARTED, with all your data. If anything doesn't restore correctly blame iTunes, not the jailbreak attempt.
quick example of my last sentence: My friend got a new phone from Apple, and when restoring her data half the thumbnails of her photos are gone. now if anyone sees this after a jailbreak attempt they'd blame the jailbreak attempt. no it's itunes.
You DON'T UPDATE your phone until the "thinking of updating to (insert version here)?" link in Cydia turns green. and then you get the latest pwnagetool and repeat the process.
look at all these articles ... "wow someone did something mad awesome with the iphone" .. it always ends with "of course it requires jailbreaking.."
Just like in John Lennon's song Imagine.. "Imagine.. What if .. you could do everything you wanted with the iPhone... without jailbreaking? Just imagine.."
Fake; Show us a video with Wifi turned off,... its clearly a fake, just a vnc connect.
And if you think vnc is just used for the "input", why doesnt he show us the Settings app without wifi? And types like it was the greatest mystery. I'd love to see this working, but at this point, apperently it's fake.
If you post videos about the iPhone please post them in a format that works on the bloody thing!!!

"
- bt icon is not visible because theyâre not using apple BT, but btnut (another stack which I suppose cannot handle UI stuff like bt icon
- vnc icon is present because vnc is used to handle keyboard input events "
The comments in this thread highlight one thing, that being Apple needs to get to work on it's Bluetooth stack. I really love my iPhone but frankly it won't take much to get me to switch if Apple can't support the hardware they have in the device already. Bluetooth is so important for portable devices that it is a huge mistake on Apples part to ignore the common profiles.
As to the demo well I haven't even looked as I've yet to jailbreak mine. The problem of course is that jailbreaking adds that layer of issues for each and every update that comes out. Maybe iPhone OS 3.0 will be stable enough that a jailbreak will make sense. Of course if they do 3.0 right there will be far less in the way of needs for jailbreaking in the first place. This is a big hint for Apple, free up the iPhone and add the missing hardware support and watch the jailbreak community shrink away.

nope, see above.
February 23 2009 at 7:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI remember those days with my Palm (PDA) and the stowable keyboard. Actually I still have both in my "museum" at home. It was a lot easier to bring that along to meetings than a laptop. Note that I used a mouse pad underneath the keyboard so that it wasn't nearly so noisy.
Yes I really wish that I could do this with my Apple bluetooth keyboard and my iPhone.
I've been dreaming of an external keyboard for years. If only there was one, I'd ditch my laptop on most of my trips and completely depend on my iphone. If Apple has no interest, why don't they let 3rd party manufacturers produce keyboards like they let them produce docks?
