I suffered greatly at the hands of 10.5.6 in the form of wifi dropouts. I would sometimes lose my connection from full bars to nothing once every minute. I couldn't download updates because it would skip and I would lose connection. I ended up downgrading to 10.5.2 and everything worked fine. Finally, sick of "living in the past," I decided to have another go at it with the Combo Update. I had it downloaded all of 5 minutes when the dropouts began. I was leaving this morning to take my iMac to the service center 2 hours away, when I decided to wait until tomorrow.
The TUAW posted this news about some more updates. My heart skipped a beat as I looked through the various titles to see "Airport Utility Update." I quickly downloaded the updates (dropping my connection several times in the process.) So far, I'm good. It's been about 15 minutes and no dropouts yet. Thanks to TUAW for reporting the news that saved me a 4 hour trip to the service center!

Exactly my problem with 10.5 - I even concidered downgrading to 10.4 but well, whenever I decide "it's time", then all of a sudden the connection seemed to work well for a longer period. It's kinda strange as the WLAN connection is still up but some sites just don't respond anymore. For instance, searching on Google stops on several occasions a day, not a real problem because at such moments, Yahoo search does still work.
I'm not sure about the cause of the problem, it's not just TCP/IP, it might be ARP or something. It might also be a problem with the ADSL router but why do the sites still work from Windows and Ubuntu and even my iPhone?
Anyway, I'm always interested in any update regarding the airport. Installed it and so far no problems (screen came up as well, as some people with MBP/ Santa Rosa seemd to have problems - I have such a MBP as well but I had resetted the SMC a while back already)

How are you holding up on dropouts? Since the update mine have gone from every 5 minutes to maybe once an hour. I still find that unacceptable considering the amount of money that we paid for these machines.

Exact same thing for me. I'm still getting them about once an hour or maybe every couple of hours. I agree completely. It's absolutely unacceptable. Don't get me wrong. I'm happy, but also disappointed.

I'm getting Airport drops every 2 minutes again. Apple is supremely disappointing in this area as of late. Their discussion boards are not addressing the real issue....software. They keep talking about interference and router hardware problems. They sound like politicians. Every computer in my house is running fine EXCEPT the one they keep shipping out useless updates for. I'm sick of this. I thought we had a solution, but it sucks as much as the last "update."

I got excited, only to be let down. No firmware update for the previous Airport Extreme base stations yet.. hopefully they don't back out. All I'm interested in isbeing able to access shared disks over the interwebs.

So would it b possible with a fw update to make the last gen AE perform like the new model (simultaneous dual band)?

Not really, no. Unless I heard wrong, the new models contain 2 radios. One that operates at 2.4Ghz and one at 5Ghz.

Wait.. there's a new Airport Express too?

Does anyone know if this fixes the documented bug with iPhoto faces db getting corrupting, leading to merging faces and/or dropping faces all together??

Boy. Hope that iPhoto update alleviates my headaches. I've been tagging around 10,000 pics, using the new Faces.
After a smart album of faces, I tag them with Keywords, only to go back to work on more faces, and Crash !.. Continual crashes, after the same process....
I hope that Keyboard reference straightens out something there....
I'll be trying again tomorrow, after this update.

Crap - new updates have bricked my MacMini. Not sure which one, as there were several to install at once. My MacAir is fine. But, proceed carefully!

Clarification - MacMini NOT bricked - found it on my network.
The problem seems to be the video signal - nothing on my monitor. I checked the connections several times, even booted with my Leopard CD. Hard to troubleshoot w/o a monitor. :-(
umijin said 11:15PM on 3-03-2009
A third reboot with peripherals unplugged and some futzing with video settings on the attached monitor seems to have solved the problem. Maybe the updates reset monitor brightness to zero or something comparable.
*sigh*

Screen Sharing should allieviate your lack of a monitor for troubleshooting purposes.
umijin said 11:25PM on 3-03-2009
Good tip AM! I'll look at that.
I hope screen sharing will work well, given that I can't even make Back to my Mac function.

What's up with you and the word "Bevy" today?

I have a Macbook Pro (Santa Rosa) and after the update the screen did not turn on. After some fiddling around I realized the machine did actually boot. Connecting an external display did not help address the issue.
A quite reset of my SMC resolved the issue though and the system booted fine.

MacMini is now having a hard time finding external drives and bluetooth mouse. I know better than to do a first day update.
