Tuesday is upon us: new Apple hardware

It's been busy in the dwarven mines of Cupertino, we can tell: much new iron has arrived today, and the store is back up (though getting hammered at the moment)! We'll go into detail on each of the announcements in the next hour or so, but here's the basic scoop:
All of Apple's consumer desktops have been updated, with new iMacs and new minis. The iMacs offer 'twice the memory, twice the storage' in the new $1499 base 24" model, and all have been updated with the GeForce 9400M graphics subsystem. BTO options on the 24" iMac include up to a 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, a 640GB or 1TB HD, and a rogues' gallery of graphics upgrade options: the NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 or the ATI Radeon HD 4850 instead of the 9400M. Gamers, start your engines.
The pro desktop has been revved with new Mac Pro hardware: shipping next week, the new models start $300US cheaper than before and now feature Intel's Nehalem chip, along with a redesigned interior, DisplayPort + DVI standard and more spec upgrades -- but no 16-core model.
The Airport Extreme and Time Capsule were also updated with dual-band support (allowing
Macworld also notes that there was apparently a 'stealth' update to the MacBook Pro today, bumping the top processor speed to 2.66GHz.

Ridiculous pricing for the Mini. The specs are veeery modest, and it hasn't been upgraded for, what, one and a half years?
And they turn up the price considerably.
Bad move. I'll buy something else.

I don't know if any of you live in the UK and will already know this but this pricing is so far out of line. £500 for a base spec mini! (over $700 U.S!)
I am an apple fan but seriously right now, I am pleased I am not looking to buy a replacement because they have reached the point where I would contract Psystar or move to Linux!
I guess they forgot there was a credit crisis going on world wide!

let me just say:
LOL at all the self-professed photoshop "experts" who picked apart the leaked images, rejecting them as "horrible photoshops," "the work of a 12 year old," and "obviously fake because apple would never put a wifi logo on their packaging"...even going so far as to point out "obvious" artifacts in the image.

Most of the packaging comments did seem to be from people who had not seen the previous mini's box, which had a similar icon layout.
Phil said 9:38AM on 3-03-2009
haha..couldn't agree with you more guido! It's so fun to see these people trying to debunk pictures with explanations like "well, the lighting all wrong" and "a flash doesn't do that", etc.
I hope they all promptly search for new careers as being expert graphic analysts, packaging experts, photography experts doesn't seem like it's going to pan out too well.

Looks like it's now official...Firewire 400 is now dead on all Apple products.

Michael Rose said 9:26AM on 3-03-2009
Well, if by 'dead' you mean 'requires a $8 cable to use with the FW800 port,' then sure, it's pushing up the daisies.
Frankly I am pleasantly surprised to see FW on the Mini and iMac at all, after the MacBook dropped it. Granted, 1GB of RAM on the base Mini is pretty nuts, but otherwise it makes sense to me as a home machine.
EMoShunz said 9:32AM on 3-03-2009
gotta agree with mr. rose.
personally i don't care if any tech dies as long as there is a cheap and easy way to adapt it. for instance, if usb3 comes out and has the power to convert speed and parallelism fast enough to use fw800 with it, i'd be fine with apple dropping that too and selling an $8 adapter.
Andre said 9:23AM on 3-03-2009
I suspect that Apple leaked out images that had artifacts just to get the excitement and debate going. Wouldn't you?

I seem to recall from the recent shareholder meeting discussion of new Apple Department of Obfuscuation: A team of apple employees dedicated to creating easily disprovable leaks to drive fanboy forum discussions. The department head, who shall remain nameless for security reasons, had been working for de decades on the JFK coverup. Expect that long standing coverup to fall apart now with so much talent poached, as well as big foot, Roswell and of course the loch ness monster.
:p
House of Mirth said 9:25AM on 3-03-2009
The $600 price point is a bit disappointing considering the 1GB of RAM and the economy in general. But oh well, I'm just glad the Mini is still alive. That was a lonnnngggg time with no update...

is that smaller keyboard without the keypad standard, and is it wireless, because i see a wire on the mouse?
i always hated the number pad on the right, by the time you put the mouse to the right as well and center G H on your body you run out of desk space quickly for those of us with limited space.

Also, the Apple Keyboard got a redesign too. Gone is the numeric keypad, as the wired version sports the same layout as the bluetooth version.

Anyone else catch on to the new cheap keyboard for the iMac? They are shipping a wired version of the tiny bluetooth keyboard instead of the full length keyboard with the arrow keys and number pad. I hope they offer a in-store or online upgrade for $10 or I will really be pissed. I am not paying $50 so I can have a real keyboard with my iMac.

Calm down, the sky isn't falling. If you click through to the "Buy Now" section, it's not hard to see that they are offering the extended keyboard as a /free option/. So you can have the bitty keyboard if you like it's petite size, or just order the extended keyboard.
Karsten said 10:04AM on 3-03-2009
if you use the iMac in addition to a notebook you'll probably enjoy the new keyboard cause you have the same layout as on the notebook. I'm always very annoyed when i have use the long keyboard at the iMac and never hit the right keys when doing shortcuts and stuff.
JAQ said 11:52AM on 3-03-2009
They're going to have a lot of pissed off (or at least disappointed) customers if they don't offer the full-size keyboard in the stores. I've seen the following scenario play out countless times in the Apple Store: 1) Customer excitedly asks Specialist about wireless keyboard/mouse option for iMac. 2) Specialist says how neat it is, and shows them what the wireless keyboard looks like. 3) Customer buys iMac with wired keyboard/mouse. People who are buying desktop computers (especially 24-inchers) don't want a laptop keyboard.
