Beta Beat: TweetDeck ripe with potential
Since it's turned into Twitter Thursday around here... In a moment of sheer frustration with Twitterrific, I sent out a call on my Twitter feed for recommendations of a desktop Twitter client. Several folks replied with a nod to TweetDeck, an Adobe AIR-based client currently in development for OS X, Linux, and Windows.TweetDeck is a pretty neat program. The selling point is the ability to split your main Twitter feed into subfeeds that you can then organize into different groups. You can have Twitter be as narrow as a single column while you scroll back and forth in it, or you can make it full-screen and have your monitor filled with nothing but tweeting goodness.
There's a lot of features as well. If you go over the 140-character limit, you can hit a "TweetShrink" button that will turn some of the words to LOL-speak in order to fit the limit. You can upload pictures -- clicking on the TwitPic button will upload the image file to TwitPic and give you the URL for your feed -- and you can shorten URLs via your choice of service by clicking the "Shorten" button.
Another very cool feature is the ability to translate your tweets into another language. The translation is pretty accurate -- even for more difficult languages such as the Japanese I tested with the application. The program itself is highly customizable, and you can tweak the colors and fonts to whatever you like. You can also set different update times for various feeds: for example, you can have your main friends update every minute, but your private messages every five minutes.
TweetDeck is extremely polished for a beta client and I've yet to get the error messages that plagued me with Twitterrific. If you're searching for a free desktop client for Twitter, it's hard to beat this one.
TweetDeck is in public beta and requires the Adobe AIR runtime, which is a Universal binary and needs OS X 10.4.11 or higher. AIR will be installed during the TweetDeck installation process if you do not already have it.

Twitterrific just sucks. No way to type all the text first and then be able to shorten it, no way to shorten a URL before you actually type in the text, no way to search.
To be honest, the best one I've found so far is DestroyTwitter with its concept of canvases.

Agreed. Just found DestroyTwitter last night. Best UI i've seen in power desktop clients, but still lacking groups.
Really suprised that TweetDeck seems to be the only game in town with grouping.
Twitter.com is still the most usable for me for interacting (writing, replying).

Ditto on the Destroy Twitter. Tweetdeck gives me headaches.

Agreed, just discovered DestroyTwitter the other day, but I've been loving it so far.
I do miss Twitteriffic's Cmd+Left Arrow shortcut to visit the user's twitter page, however.

DestroyTwitter is the best thing ever. The newest beta has themes.
Its really the best one out there. Simple and easy to use. Beautiful interface.

Playing with the beta of EventBox by The Cosmic People. http://bit.ly/19hInP.
Access to Twitter, Facebook, RSS feeds, Google Reader, Flickr & Reddit. 14 day trial, $15 during beta phase (although I feel paying for beta software is nasty, considering you're testing it for them). $20 at launch.
Good UI, and simple to use.

I'm using Eventbox too, but really don't wanna pay for it. But I do really like it. Just sucks that it has to sit active in the dock rather than up top in the status bar.

You can use Dock Dodger to hide the dock icon. They're planning on making the dock icon hidable in a future build, but until then, they suggest Dock Dodger (which is free).

By the way...
It's "Rife with potential" not "Ripe"
But it's easy to see how you would think Ripe.

You should also check out Pwitter. It's free, looks great, and works great.

I'v been using TweetDeck for awhile and I love it- if they add tinysong into it I will be set for everything. I also gave Twhirl a run too to see how it feels.

The three clients I've been using : Thwhirl, TweetDeck, and DestroyTwitter. DT is currently my favorite. TweetDeck would definitely be my second favorite right now.

I was using TweetDeck for a while but I get fed up with not being able to close it and have it stay live on the dock or even having an icon on the status bar. Its an excellent program on Windows (unfortunately have to use at work) but the mac version needs some work.

I'm using Pwitter ( http://wiki.github.com/koroshiya1/pwitter )
It's a bit like Twitterrific, but obviously less obnoxious (no ads) and many more features. It looks a lot nicer.

Agreed.
AIR applications take too much resources, always at 5% so I ditched it.
Tried Syrinx, not bad.
But now I am with Pwitter and I love it.
