New iPod shuffle features VoiceOver
The store is back, and the rapid rumor ramp-up is vindicated: Apple introduced a new iPod shuffle this morning, billed as 'the first music player that talks to you' -- it features a VoiceOver interface that announces artists, songs and playlists on demand (the iPod nano features spoken menus as well, so that tagline may need some work). Interestingly, the VoiceOver UI concept was mused upon by John Gruber last month. The shuffle now supports multiple playlists, which would have been difficult to manage without some sort of UI for controlling which one is playing.
The new shuffle expands to 4 GB of storage for the same $79US, but in the course of shrinking the overall size of the microscopic MP3 maven down to 1.8" high, 0.7" wide and 0.3" deep (45mm x 17mm x 7.8mm), the player controls were moved onto the headphone cord. This may not sit well with buyers who prefer other earbuds.
The shuffle is available in black and silver and is shipping in 3-5 days.

hw do u go 2 da previous song?
bcos i kno u can go next by double click but i donno hw 2 go bck
One option would be to nix the earbuds and include a remote/headphone jack. A very small change... But, could they cut the price enough to offset the purchase of after market headphones? I think the bulk price of the sketchy apple buds can't be more than a buck... Would you complain if the price only dropped a few dollars sans earbuds? I think most would. Change the design, lower the price, sell more shuffles? Maybe.
Amazing it's so small, BUT I've lost 2 BT headsets because they are so small, I know I'd lose this!!!!
very cool though, great for sports and excercizing etc....!! :-)
Great, look so cool, i'd like to get one, and looking for whether it can put my dvd on new iPod shuffle, glad to find one which can convert dvd and video to new iPod shuffle, i find it at below;

At first glance, the new shuffle looks plain!
"where are the controls?"
I imagine that Apple deliberately left the front face completely plain and even put the logo on the clip to over emphacize the lack of controls.
Everyone who sees this is going to ask where the controls are.
Talk, buzz, whatever you call it sells products for Apple.
Having people seen in the wild with the signature white Apple earbuds is also free advertising for Apple. Why would they make it easy to switch to a competing earbud maker for replacements? Especially now that they make two types of earbuds.
I think Apple wants people to be seen contolling iPods through the earbuds.
It is yet another thing that sets Apple apart from its competitors.
It's called marketing people, and Apple is very good at it.
i dont like it... the design is just so stale. it seems like something is missing.

Each have their place BUT the shuffle is always my choice for running, The 1G had a lanyard which was okay. The 2G clip is brilliant and the design has always meant no need for an armband of belt-pouch.
When running the quality of Apple's earbuds just doesn't matter. The control mechanism of the in-line earphone switch is fine - I've used it before with the iPhone and I got the in-ear buds for my 4G nano. I didn't like the in-ear buds. You have to insert them quite deep into the ear canal or you don't hear the bass and when you do then every movement of the cord when running injects a "thump" into your ear.
The iPhone cable had a mic as do the buds you can buy seperately on the store. Unfortunately my iPhone switch lasted 2 runs before sweat that had run down the cord got in through the mic hole and it hasn't worked since. I hope these new buds don't have a mic or they've improved the design.
Either way for running this new shuffle seems perfect.
One last observation. Has anyone noticed from the introductory video that the voice is different for Mac and PC.
I assume therefore that the "voice capabilities" (ie the shuffle itself generates the speech from text) everyone is quoting is nothing of the sort. I suspect a small AAC file is generated by iTunes using Mac OS X's or Window's voice synthesis capabilities and this is included along with the song or playlist when the song is sync'd.
talking thing is good for blind people, even though rockbox has been doing it forever.
i hate the controls.
Looks a little bit bor-ring for an Apple product.
Besides the headphone problem they should never have called it . . .
The Apple Shufflebored.
