Here come the new iPod shuffle accessories
Now that everyone is getting used to the new iPod shuffle, the accessory makers are already pumping out the third-party additions (or at least announcing them). Some of the more interesting ones I've seen so far are:- the Dexim Shu-Lip (right) that basically offers a streamlined 1/8" plug to USB dongle that turns the new shuffle into a thumb drive ($10).
- Headphones with included button controller as well as an adapter for existing headphones that just adds just the button controller from Scosche ($49.95 - $99.99 coming in "the Spring").
- Headphones with controller from Klipsch ($99.99 "this summer").
- Headphones with controller from Etymotic (pdf link) (availability not announced).

To a certain extent, the previous shuffle was good for what it did. This is just ridiculous though. I love my Ipod touch and love all the things it does. For the shuffle, I think only minor changes in design to designate change while increasing memory and battery life. Maybe even adding a small pager like screen on it while keeping it pack of gum size.
There are lots of things to do. But this stinks to a large degree since Apple is charging all 3rd party designs for a licensing fee. All that does is make a $80 mp3 player go up to $120+ when all is said and done.
Hmmm... I see a flame pot brewing... Ok, fair enough, let's assume the new Shuffle is a real piece of crap and no one in their right minds would buy it in its standard form. If these accessories aren't what you're looking for, what are?
I'd be much more interested to hear about what people want to see rather than criticizing each other.
I do agree to some extent that moving the controls from the devise was a bad move, I mean, how frekin' small does it have to be
Is there any saving the Shuffle?
Wow, four posts in a 20 post thread. you're right, you're not a fanboy wanker AT ALL. See if you can resist: The new shuffle blows, it's a triumph of "Apple design" over actual utility. It's an F'ing USB stick. Only a fool would buy it.
See you at post 5 :)
uh, you're the one that's posted three times to this thread, defending this POS.
March 15 2009 at 1:23 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat? Name ONE thing I've said which "defends" the iPod shuffle? All I have said is that if you don't like the shuffle you shouldn't buy it. That's it. I'd hardly call that a defense of the device or of Apple. It's not my problem if you can't (or refuse) understand that.
So far all you've done is trolled me twice (wncommercial and i use antlers are the same person - http://www.tuaw.com/profile/362846/) and contributed zero to the conversation. I've said what I'm going to say, and I'm not going to play your little trolling game any longer. Have yourself a merry little weekend, and don't forget to not buy the iPod shuffle!
Simon Arch: I won't. But you seem awful eager to defend the Mother Church from heretics who point out the obvious: this one's a stinker. But aren't your efforts unnecessary? Won't all the doubters burn in hell for their sacrilege?
March 14 2009 at 1:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply"Don't buy it" = "BURN IN HELL YOU JOBS-DAMNED HERETICS"? That's seriously what you get out of my comments? Wow. I had no idea I was delivering a fire-and-brimstone sermon on behalf of my corporate masters in Cupertino. They need to pay me more, I guess.
*rolleyes*
Did you guys read the article? $49 to $99 for a control adapter in order to use your own headphones? That's pretty much the cost of the iPod itself ($79) - ridiculous. A *free* adapter should be bundled by Apple. Period. The controls argument still stands until there's an alternative that doesn't cost as much as the original device.
The Scosche stuff looks nice.
March 14 2009 at 11:53 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply"deliriously dumb" - wow, that's constructive criticism.
I'm tired of reading about how "stupid" it is that Apple separated the controls from the device. Last I checked, ALL music players have to have earphones connected to listen to music (built-in speakers, and Bluetooth headsets, excepted). So, if you're already going to have headphones connected, why not place the controls where they are more convenient to use?
Complain about the quality of the headphones (which are NOT that bad; the In-Ear versions are actually quite good) if you want, but even that complaint is negated once other manufacturers start making compatible versions. Users will be able to choose their preferred manufacturer, and not only gain the ability of using those headphones with the new shuffle, but also with ALL models in Apple's latest iPod lineup.
Never did understand accessories for a shuffle. Many cost almost as much as the player itself! Imagine $99 for a $79 iPod! But I suppose it has more to do with usability than price.
March 13 2009 at 10:27 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI am curious if the new headphones will work with the iPhone/iPod Touch? I think the new Apple headphones have a remote built into them, I just don't see spending $80 for a pair of headphones; especially since they are from Apple (they don't sound as good as say Sony).
March 13 2009 at 9:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThey are the same controls that the '08 iPod touch and the '08 Nano can use already. The iPhone can currently only use the center click feature, not the volume controls.
