Here come the new iPod shuffle accessories
Now that everyone is getting used to the new iPod shuffle, the accessory makers are already pumping out the third-party additions (or at least announcing them). Some of the more interesting ones I've seen so far are:- the Dexim Shu-Lip (right) that basically offers a streamlined 1/8" plug to USB dongle that turns the new shuffle into a thumb drive ($10).
- Headphones with included button controller as well as an adapter for existing headphones that just adds just the button controller from Scosche ($49.95 - $99.99 coming in "the Spring").
- Headphones with controller from Klipsch ($99.99 "this summer").
- Headphones with controller from Etymotic (pdf link) (availability not announced).

but who cares? the older ipod shuffle is still available, and this one, i'd throw in the trash before i lose it in a candy jar. i mean seriously, smaller is better to a certain extent.

This is good. I knew that the third party manufacturers would follow up with accessories. Now the cry babies who are whining about Apple's decision to move the controls into the earphones can stop complaining. Every few months, Apple releases something new, and every time people piss and moan about something that they don't like without bothering to find out how things will work out, and without waiting until they actually see the new product. I've read several "reviews" of the new iPod Shuffle. Some of them actually list as cons that the Shuffle doesn't have a radio! One moron reviewer actually complained that the Shuffle doesn't have an LCD screen! Where do they dig up these idiots?

"Now the cry babies who are whining about Apple's decision to move the controls into the earphones can stop complaining."
Why would these babies stop? It's not as if this negates the deliriously dumb decision of removing controls off the device in hopes of implying that device is much smaller.
All these accessories may do is stop you from crying and whining about others.

If I was going to buy one, the least I would do is wait until those adapters for using decent headphones with the remote came out.
Which they are.
So that's good.

Why should they start in the first place? If this doesn't appeal to you (and from your hyperbolic rhetoric I'll assume it doesn't), DON'T BUY IT.

Maybe it's because the point of the Shuffle is to be cheap. So spending $100+ for a pair of earbuds that don't suck (thus practically doubling the cost) makes the new Shuffle pointless. Might as well get a Nano, where I can use a much more comfortable pair of earbuds.

Two days and the new shuffle already has more third party accessories than the Zune.

I am curious if the new headphones will work with the iPhone/iPod Touch? I think the new Apple headphones have a remote built into them, I just don't see spending $80 for a pair of headphones; especially since they are from Apple (they don't sound as good as say Sony).

They are the same controls that the '08 iPod touch and the '08 Nano can use already. The iPhone can currently only use the center click feature, not the volume controls.

Never did understand accessories for a shuffle. Many cost almost as much as the player itself! Imagine $99 for a $79 iPod! But I suppose it has more to do with usability than price.

"deliriously dumb" - wow, that's constructive criticism.
I'm tired of reading about how "stupid" it is that Apple separated the controls from the device. Last I checked, ALL music players have to have earphones connected to listen to music (built-in speakers, and Bluetooth headsets, excepted). So, if you're already going to have headphones connected, why not place the controls where they are more convenient to use?
Complain about the quality of the headphones (which are NOT that bad; the In-Ear versions are actually quite good) if you want, but even that complaint is negated once other manufacturers start making compatible versions. Users will be able to choose their preferred manufacturer, and not only gain the ability of using those headphones with the new shuffle, but also with ALL models in Apple's latest iPod lineup.

Did you guys read the article? $49 to $99 for a control adapter in order to use your own headphones? That's pretty much the cost of the iPod itself ($79) - ridiculous. A *free* adapter should be bundled by Apple. Period. The controls argument still stands until there's an alternative that doesn't cost as much as the original device.

So don't buy the product.

Simon -
I understand the "don't buy it" argument to a certain extent. I have a feeling entica won't. But does that mean s/he can't voice an opinion on the features, price, and included (or lack thereof) accessories?

"But does that mean s/he can't voice an opinion"
It means no such thing, and I don't think anything I said could be construed to imply they have no such freedom. I just offered up a bit of advice. Don't like the product? Don't buy it. That will send Apple a far clearer message than a rant in the comments section of a tech blog. Free expression is a wonderful thing, to be certain, but I doubt anyone at Apple is actually reading these comments.

i think the author has misstated the information about the adapter by scosche.com. if you follow the link, there is a paragraph talking about 3 new earphone models with integrated controllers coming out, which are priced from $49 - $99. in the next paragraph there is this:
"Scosche is also developing an inline control adapter kit that allows consumers to use any standard set of headphones and enjoy all of the advanced features of the third generation iPod shuffle. The inline control also allows users to plug their shuffle into any vehicles auxiliary input and maintain full control of the iPod."
from my reading, this is a separate device that has no pricing information yet.
personally, it would make sense for it not to be between $20 - $30 being that the shuffle itself is so cheap, but that's my opinion...

Simon Arch: I won't. But you seem awful eager to defend the Mother Church from heretics who point out the obvious: this one's a stinker. But aren't your efforts unnecessary? Won't all the doubters burn in hell for their sacrilege?
