Apple's Bluetooth headset gets the axe
I'll admit it: I loathe Bluetooth headsets. It's impossible to walk around with one of those things protruding from your head without looking like a total tool. No one's impressed, Lieutenant Uhura.I'd like to think it was that reason that prompted Apple to stop selling the iPhone Bluetooth headsets, but it was probably poor sales. We don't have sales figures, of course, but I've never seen one in the wild.*
It's also possible that Apple is up to something else. You'll remember that iPhone OS 3.0 touts support for A2DP Stereo Bluetooth connectivity among its features. The headset which shipped with the 1st generation iPhone had a built-in switch, similar to the one included with the current iPod shuffle. Perhaps a future model will control the iPod and answer calls over Bluetooth? If so, it had better be pretty cool.
*Out of fairness, I'll state that I live in a town of 4,000. Not exactly a hive of early adopters.

I love this. They discontinued it "most likely" due to lack of sales.
Now I imagine they probably think that they think it was a failed product based on anything you can possibly think of, except, what is probably the #1 reason why it failed, the price.
$99 for a bluetooth headset? Yeah... that's why I passed on it.
not because I'd look like a tool wearing it. Last time I checked I was over getting all nervous about whether or not other people would 'approve' of what I'm wearing. Of course, IMO people look like tools texting 24/7/365 but I don't go around saying anything about it =) To each their own. (note: this is not an insult.. it's just not how I roll, that's all.) ps: i've never even owned a BT headset either, so don't think i'm just being over defensive of being called a tool =)
Hello, it's impossible not to look like a total tool with *any* bluetooth headset.

March 24 2009 at 3:05 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think bt headsets are geeky too when worn in public places, but using one while driving is a different story. I use one whenever I'm going to be driving for longer than 20 minutes. I will admit though, that I'm the only person I know with an Apple Bluetooth headset. If they do bring out a new version, I certainly hope it will perform better than the original. Dropped bluetooth connections just because you put your phone in your pocket just aren't acceptable.

March 24 2009 at 12:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi've had the bluetooth since it first came out. i've had 2-3 replacements, but mostly because i had issues with syncing or charging. connections were weird, sometimes i could be a full 10ft away with no problems, other times i would get static when placing in my backpocket...
but its formfactor is soo awesome, i could never give it up. of course it was also so lightweight and unnoticeable, that i didnt notice it had fallen outta my ear for 2 hours. by that time, its been long gone.
one thing i never understood was the fact that sometime i would be listening to music through the headphone jack, outputting to my car stereo's tape deck. when i would get a phone call, i would answer with the bluetooth and for a good 2-3 seconds, the music would play in the bluetooth headset.
well hears hoping for a nice stereo bt headset...but not one that makes me look like a jogger or something.
i can even count how many times people stopped what they were doing to ask about my bluetooth. its easily one of the smallest, lightest, and most cool looking ones out there. voice dialing would be nice...or at least a redial function.
i've used some motorolla ones and the jabra jx10, which was super small, but broke everytime it fell outta my ear. needed 2 replacements.
i dropped the apple headset right in the toilet (clean water) and contemplated not taking it out...figured it was done...but ended up pulling out after at least 15-20 seconds in there, and all worked fine.
of course until i lost it. LOL
I love BT headsets and the people who think people wearing them look like tools are the ones with the problem. I guess you're the same type of people who still think people with tattoos are bikers and earrings, devil worshipers.
March 24 2009 at 11:00 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHonestly, I just think it's lazy to keep it on one's ear constantly. If a dude goes to the park with his daughter, and he's got one on his ear the whole time, I just want to slap him for having his priorities mixed up. If I'm sitting next to a guy on a 4-hour plane ride (during which, he can't use his phone anyway), and he keeps the thing on, I just want to ask "are...are you serious?"
I've got this tiny little Apple BT Headset, puny as could be, and I still keep it in my pocket unless/until my phone rings. If I'm in the car, I put it in the cupholder. But hey, that's just me.
Yep, that's exactly what I was saying...I was saying that you and everyone else who wears these things is a tool. I was also planning on making the other two sweeping and unfounded generalizations you gave me, now that you've brought them to my attention!
But seriously, I hate how they look on me. You've gotta admit, even if you love how they function, some of them are pretty silly looking. If you like 'em, rock on with your bad self. Who cares what I think anyway? I just haven't seen one I'd ever wear yet.
Besides, I think my piercings and tattoos wouldn't like me to say mean things about them. :)
I love the idea of bluetooth...short-range RF that lets your smart devices communicate with each other, and sometimes without you telling them to (as in, "Hey phone...I'm a headset. Let's talk.")
Still, I've never actually had a bluetooth headset, because I still use one with a cord coming from behind one ear. I don't mind that I sometimes look like a secret agent, because it sure makes me feel better about myself than looking like Lobot from the Empire Strikes Back, which is pretty much how every one of those godawful goofy things looks.
I'm the last guy to be vain about my appearance, believe me, but I just can't do it yet. They can make micro hearing aids...how about these?
I have a phone with the 3.0 beta OS, and have paired it with a cheap-o BestBuy "Insignia" A2DP headphones. The audio quality playing music is acceptable, but using them as a headset for talking is painful and scratchy. The iPhone itself lags the Bluetooth stereo audio anytime there's a GUI effect (say, rotating from portrait to cover flow in the iPod app).
I also have it paired with a bluetooth stereo system, and it works great, except for the aforementioned lag. I'm excited by the prospect of using a really good bluetooth headphone set with the phone. Also, the pause/play and skip buttons of the headphones don't work, and the phone doesn't properly control the BT volume by itself. I'm sure they're working on more solid support, so we'll see what future versions hold.
I picked up one of these when I got my iPhone 3G.
I use it when I'm driving and found that it works well.
Previously, I had a Jabra "ear slug" and I like the Apple headset better.
I am interested to see what Apple will replace it with.
